🏦 The House of Scientists at 26 Palace Embankment was the first of its kind in Russia. It opened in 1920 on the initiative of Maxim Gorky.
In its early years, it helped starving researchers by providing food, housing, and medical care. During the Siege of Leningrad, the House remained open: scientists worked on tasks vital to the war effort, and an infirmary operated for researchers.
But this building has another story – a family one. The palace once belonged to Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, son of Alexander II and brother of Alexander III. His family lived here, surrounded by family gatherings, grand receptions, and quiet evenings. After the Revolution, the palace stood empty until 1920, when its walls welcomed a new “family” – the scientific community of Petrograd. Thus, the grand-ducal palace became a home for scientists.
Today, the House remains a vibrant scientific and cultural center, hosting lectures, concerts, and exhibitions, alongside numerous clubs and societies. In 2026, it came under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Sciences to help preserve its unique heritage.
