A winter day in St Petersburg: skating, eating and enjoying art

I have got a wonderful New Year gift from my daughter and her husband - racing scates!

⭕So I spent a couple of hours on the skating ring on New Holland Iceland in the very heart of the city ( by the way I have met there a couple from Turkey trying to scate as well )

⭕then had a nourishing lunch in the former prison(the locals called it The Bottle) turned into very nice food court with plenty of little restaurants

⭕ finished my day enjoying Albreht Durer exhibit in the nearby Hermitage Museum

Ready to repeat it with my English-speaking guests from any country

🔷️The Hermitage Museum presented it’s  renewed permanent exhibition of Iranian art.
🔷️The real pearl of this exhibit is the collection of Sasanian silver which is considered to be the best in the world.

🔷️Part of the collection earlier belonged to the rich Russian family of Stroganovs,  which possessed vast lands near the  Ural Mountains in Siberia and part of it came to the Hermitage as a result of archeological excavations near Perm city (Siberia)   made by the scientists from the Hermitage itself.

🔷️So the provenance of the Hermitage collection is proven by corresponding documents; it is very important as there are many counterfeits of Sasanian Silver on the world art market.

⭕Most are plates decorated with scenes and ornaments. Frequently found on Sasanian fine metalwork are scenes of a king out hunting. In overcoming a wild beast the ruler demonstrated his might and his power over the surrounding world .

⭕Another subject featuring the king showed him enthroned, surrounded by courtiers, servants and musicians. Sasanian metalwork placed great emphasis on details, with loving depiction of folds and embroidered patterns of garments, jewelry, arms and armor of the king, horse caparison, furniture and utensils

🤴Last Russian Tsar and Tsarina's  marriage was an exception in the long line of royal marriages in Europe: it was based on a passionate love

⭕Alexander Palace in Tsar Village (200 meters from Catherine Palace with Amber Room) became the favorite residence of the last tsar’s family.
⭕Here they spent their honeymoon and their first daughter Olga was born.
⭕From 1904 and on it became their permanent residence and a real home they both loved so much
⭕On the 1st of August 1917 the happy family with 5 children was arrested here and a bit later sent to Siberia towards their death in 1918 in Yekaterinburg city.
⭕Right now only 12 rooms are open after restoration but it is enough to impress those who want to learn more about the everyday life of the most important people of the Russian Empire.
⭕So let’s start our short tour through the most beautiful rooms
⭕Alexander palace' tiny model was a surprise from Faberge Easter Egg Tsarina got from her loving husband in 1908;It was kept in a special glass cupboard in the corner of the most beautiful room of the palace
⭕The Maple Drawing room. This room as well as the rest of the palace was designed in Art Nouveau style
⭕The Mauve Drawing room got its name after the color of fabric on the walls. According to the legend, Tsarina, trying to explain what color she prefers, showed the lilac branch to the court architect Meltser.
⭕The corner chair in the room was the favorite one for all members of the family – it was near the window and well-lit. Perhaps here (or in the Corner Drawing Room) the  couple played piano in four hands and then the tsar read his wife Russian classics aloud.

⭕The tsar loved sport. By his order a horizontal bar and little swimming pool were arranged in his rest room, which was designed in Moorish style; children were allowed to use the pool only from their father’s permission.

⭕ Tsar’s New Study- official study where the monarch received his ministers and other statesmen; there is a corner staircase leading to the special semi floor with children rooms (not restored) and a billiard table in the middle

🤳The Church is “an icon” of St Petersburg, clearly seen from its main thoroughfare-Nevsky prospect and is definitely one of a kind for many reasons!

⭕ it is the only building in the European capital of Russia not built in one of the  European styles.

⭕It is the world famous for its outside and inside incredibly beautiful mosaics

⭕The Church  is practically the only building in the city whose location was chosen not by the architect but by the customer: after the death  of the Tsar Alexander II his son decided to create a small chapel directly on the place where  his father was mortally wounded.

⭕However, instead of the chapel it was decided to construct a church in the style of Moscow and Yaroslavl churches, for Alexander II loved Moscow. The highest dome of the building is 81 meters to remind us of the assassination date – the 1st of March 1881, and the second highest dome is 63 meters – this is how old Alexander II was when he died.

⭕It wasn’t ruined by communists as it happened with many other city churches but first left in neglect (as “an object of no artistic value”) and later turned into a storehouse for the  nearby theatre. The restoration took more time than construction; it was opened for the wide public in 1975 only.

😁Would you like to taste an art?Literally?

⭕No problems- there is a unique chance for that- in the very downtown of St Petersburg -and   we actually did it already,

⭕trying an apple from Renee Magritte painting ( wow! How really tasty it was!)

⭕and a peach from Russian artist Valentin Serov’s  “A girl with a peach”  (original is in Russian Museum in St Petersburg);

⭕it was too much for us and  we only took picture of Andy Worhole's "Lips"  leaving it to you when you are in St Petersburg !!

😁St Petersburg is the cultural capital of Russia.

😁No wonder we have plenty of libraries and bookstores scattered around the city.

▶️ However, the main one is the Public Library named after Russian writer Saltykov-Schedrin.

⭕ The building on the picture is the  library’s branch for students and  one of the last samples(1986-1998) of soviet architecture  in our city.
