Russian federation

A Russian law, which facilitates the procedures for obtaining citizenship for foreigners and stateless persons, has entered into force, it does not include the requirement to abandon original citizenship, and reduces the period required to reside in Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed this federal law in April 2020.

Previous legislation obligated the applicant to obtain citizenship, to go to the competent body in a foreign country, with a concurrent document on the renunciation of his first nationality.

The new law does not require, when applying for citizenship, residence in Russia for a period of three years, as well as proving the existence of a legal source of livelihood for adults without nationalities, and for citizens of the Soviet Union, who live in the countries that were members of it, and did not obtain Nationality of these countries.

The same rule applies to foreigners married to Russians, live in Russia and have common children, and also foreigners who have one of their parents with Russian citizenship and live in Russia.

Among the facilities of the new law to obtain citizenship is the reduction of the period of work required in the Russian Federation for people who graduated from Russian universities from three years to one year.
