Keeping it real, not social media real.

I was looking through old photos last night and it made me sad to see how much weight I’ve gained in the last year. It’s not like I wanted this to happen, life sometimes gets away from you. To be fair I had three major surgeries in 10 months last year. I stopped working in person, and therefore moving around on a regular basis. I was busy healing and rehabbing. I’m still doing physical therapy this year too. Healing is a journey. It takes time to recover and bounce back.

When I look at these pictures I definitely miss how skinny I look and how good I felt. I don’t like the way I feel in clothes these days, but I’ll get back to that again. The point I want to make is even though I’m skinny and happy looking I was in so much pain. I had two bad knees and a pinched nerve. I could barely move and I was in pain all day every day. For 15 years I limped around on my two bad knees, that were both bone on bone. I begged doctors to give me knee replacements but no one would because of my age. My knees were physically, and literally, in their 80’s.

I don’t like that my scars look like seven inches of a marker drawn down my leg. But the color means they’re still inflamed which means they’re still healing. The color is fading at this point which encourages me that my body is doing what it’s supposed to do. Healing isn’t the same for everyone.

While I don’t like the look of my bright scars and my heavy frame my life is better now because of it. I can move without pain. I can walk without having to sit down and take a break because it hurts too much. I can go up and down stairs without my knees making a crunching noise on every step. My doctor changed my life. I’m forever grateful. I would do it over again the exact same way with no regrets.

Healing takes time. It’s a process you can’t rush. I’ll put in the work and get back to where I was, but this time I’ll move freely with ease. I wear these scars proudly. I’m better now because of them.
