The House with fire-birds is one of most spectacular wooden building in Tomsk.
It was built for Tomsk merchant Leonty Zhelyabo in 1903. According to legend the house was to become a wedding present to the merchant’s daughter.
Currently the building is a residential block with eight flats.

Why you should visit Tomsk?
One of the reasons is the unique landmarks of wooden architecture. The wooden houses in Tomsk were built in XVIII, XIX, XX centuries in various architectural styles (classical, art-nouveau, eclectic, the Russian folk style).
Some of these houses are still residential blocks, some of them are administrative buildings, some of them are museums or cultural centers.
You have chance not only admire these buildings outside but also go inside, walk up the creaky wooden stairs, feel the charm of the past.

How did the first Tomsk fortress look like?

Tomsk is one of the oldest towns in Siberia. It was founded by Russian Cossacks in summer 1604.
The first Tomsk fortress was built on a high hill on the right bank of the river Tom. First the Cossacks constructed a northern wall. It had a tower with the entrance gates in the middle and two corner towers. Next eastern and western walls were built. The western wall was partly consisted of dwellings and warehouses. The southern wall for lack of time was made of a picket fence. In its center one more gate tower was raised. There was a small Trinity church inside the fortress. By 7 October 1604 the fortress was mostly completed. That day is considered to be the birthday of Tomsk. They called it Tomsk after the river Tom.

Sometimes tourists ask me if there are any UNESCO monuments in Tomsk or Tomsk region.
No, we don't have UNESCO objects yet. But we have the Vasyugan swamp located to the north of Tomsk between two large Siberian Rivers - the Ob and the Irtysh. Since 2007 it's been included in the preliminary UNESCO World Heritage List. The Vasyugan swamp is the largest swamp in the world. It's area is about 53 000 km3. This is a whole sea of fresh water! Also the swamp contains huge reserves of peat. The average depth of the swamp is 2.4 m, a the maximum is 10 m.
Tourists can get there by car (SUV) or by helicopter.
Special training is required.

This year my alma mater, Tomsk state university marks its 140 anniversary. In September on the anniversary celebrations a new monument was installed in the university grove. The monument is devoted to two people who made significant contribution to the university foundation. They are professors Vasily Florinsky and Dmitry Mendeleev. There is a bronze vacant chair next to the scientists. Thus every person can sit in the chair to join these outstanding people and take photo.
