In Kazakhstan, an Amur tiger was released into the wild for the first time in 70 years. A century earlier, Kazakhstan was home to the Turan tiger, now completely extinct, whose closest relative is the Amur tiger. Four Amur tigers were transported from the Russian Far East to Kazakhstan in May 2026 as part of a population restoration program near Lake Balkhash. The remaining three predators remain in quarantine and are undergoing adaptation; the decision on their release will be made on an individual basis, taking into account the age and behavior of each animal.
