David Attenborough has one of the most memorable stories ever told about mountain gorillas. During filming in Central Africa, he had a rare close encounter with a family of mountain gorillas that completely changed how many people saw these gentle giants.

Instead of showing gorillas as dangerous animals, David Attenborough revealed their calm nature, intelligence, and almost human-like behavior. In one famous moment, young gorillas curiously climbed onto him, played around him, and gently explored his clothes and hair while he sat quietly among them. It was a powerful reminder that humans and gorillas share a deep connection.

The Dominant Silverback

A male gorilla matures into a silverback at around fourteen years old. Although there can be multiple silverbacks within a troop, there is always one male that dominates over all other gorillas (except in rare instances of matriarch-led troops).

Did You Know? - A typical silverback weighs 430 pounds (195 kg) and stands 5 feet (1.5m) tall. Silverbacks are incredibly strong and can lift over 1763 pounds (800kg) of dead weight. Thatโ€™s roughly twice as much as a well trained weightlifter. In the wild, a silverback uses its immense strength to fell trees in order to reach their fruits. This makes mountain gorillas a keystone species in Virunga, since they significantly affect the ecology of their environment.

Chest beating in Silverback Gorillas: The iconic chest beat serves as an important form of communication, but there is more to it than just noise.

Gorilla chests sound hollow primarily because of large, muscular air sacs located near their larynx (voice box) and chest. When they beat their chests, these internal pockets inflate, acting like natural, resonating โ€œdrumsโ€ to amplify the sound and carry it for up to a kilometer through the dense forest.
