FORT JESUS in Old Town City, is one of the oldest and most historic cities in East Africa, and Fort Jesus stands at the heart of its story. The fort was built in 1593 by the Portuguese to protect their trade route along the Indian Ocean. At that time, Portugal controlled important sea routes connecting Europe, Africa, India, and the Middle East.
The fort was designed by an Italian architect named Giovanni Battista Cairati. What made it special was its military design: from above, the structure is said to resemble the shape of a human body, symbolizing Jesus Christ … which is why it was named “Fort Jesus.”
