Angama Mara sits a thousand feet above Kenya’s Mara Triangle, on the lip of the Oloololo Escarpment. The name comes from the Swahili for suspended in mid-air, and it earns it - the tents hang off the edge, and you watch the weather cross the plains long before it reaches you.
The Triangle below is the western third of the Maasai Mara, managed separately, with strict limits on how many vehicles can sit at a sighting. Same river, same crossings, considerably less traffic. A private road takes you down each morning to lion on the open plains, cheetah on the short grass, elephant through the riverine bush, and between roughly July and October, the crossings themselves.
Go up in a balloon at first light and you get it all at once - the river drawn out below, herds moving across the grass, breakfast on the plains where you land. From your tent you’d watch those same balloons drift past the escarpment at your own height.
It’s one of our favourite places to stay in Kenya, and it works best inside something longer. A fortnight usually runs Nairobi, a few nights in the Mara, then the coast - because a safari is a great many early mornings, and the second week is where the first one catches up with you. Slow days by the water, nothing in the diary, and the whole thing quietly settling into something you’ll still be talking about years later.
