History in the making 🦏 ✈️ 🇷🇼

On 27 November 2021, a massive win for wildlife conservation officially took place. Thirty southern white rhinos completed an epic 3,400-kilometre journey from Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa to their secure new home in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park.

This marks the largest single rhino translocation ever undertaken. From custom travel crates to a Boeing 747 flight, a dedicated team of veterinarians and conservationists worked around the clock to ensure these incredible animals arrived safely.

By expanding their range to Akagera, this historic move creates a crucial new breeding stronghold to protect the species from poaching and ensure their long-term survival in the wild.

The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in northern Kenya is Africa’s first community owned elephant sanctuary. It is a place dedicated to taking in orphaned calves and giving them the specialised care, food, and security they need until they are strong enough to return to the wild.

This keeper isn’t just looking after an animal. She is raising a future. That connection you see is what allows the calf to survive its trauma and learn the skills it will need to rejoin the surrounding wild herds. It is a relationship built on trust with a single, clear purpose: eventual release back to where they belong.

For Earth Day, let's celebrate the incredible people who wake up every single day to ensure these gentle giants have a home for generations to come. When we protect their home, we protect ours.

David Attenborough's ‘A Gorilla Story’ has rocketed into the Netflix Top 10. Have you seen it yet?

It’s truly superb.

Watching it this weekend was a powerful experience, but for us at Travulous, it felt personal.

In 1978, it was our very own Tour Leader, Ian Redmond, who introduced Sir David Attenborough to the mountain gorillas for that legendary BBC 'Life on Earth' sequence. Watching Sir David sit among the new generations of those original gorilla families today is a moving testament to the decades of protection Ian and his peers have provided.

While we often hear of wildlife in decline, a different story is being written here. The gorillas are flourishing, a living testament to what happens when humans decide to protect. That mission was first sparked by Dian Fossey and carried forward by pioneers like Ian, who didn't just learn conservation; they perfected it high up in the Virungas.

Es am Wochenende zu sehen, war eine bewegende Erfahrung, aber für uns bei Travulous fühlte es sich sehr persönlich an.
