Nyamirambo women's center

Nyamirambo women's center Nyamirambo Women's Center (www.nwc-umutima.org) is a local NGO that provides free education for women
(1)

NWC was founded in 2007 as a self-help group and quickly grew to become a center that offers free education for women in the Nyamirambo neighbourhood. Today women can join the center for classes in English, literacy, computer, sewing and handicrafts. NWC also organises workshops on Gender Equality, Women's rights and gender-based violence. In 2014 a community library was opened offering books in K

inyarwanda, French and English. In an effort to develop income-generating activities for the center but also for the women of the community, NWC developed a community-based tourism project that offers guided cultural walks in Nyamirambo and Umutima, a new line of household and children's products.

At Nyamirambo Women’s Center, our hairdressing workshop is more than a place to learn beauty skills—it is a space where confidence, creativity, and hope grow every day.

Our trainees come with passion and determination, learning step by step how to wash, style, braid, and care for hair professionally. Through practice and teamwork, they are building skills that can help them earn income, support their families, and create a better future.

Every style they create tells a story of resilience, empowerment, and new beginnings.

Women Rising Through Empowerment

During this period of commemoration, when we remember the strength and resilience that define our nation, the women at our center stand as powerful examples of hope and transformation.

Many of the women who walk through our doors carry difficult stories—stories of loss, hardship, and interrupted dreams. Yet, they arrive with courage in their hearts and a determination to rebuild their lives. At our center, they find more than training; they find a safe space to learn, to support one another, and to rediscover their confidence.

Through skills training such as tailoring, hairdressing, entrepreneurship, and other livelihood activities, these women are gaining the tools to become financially independent and provide for their families. Day by day, they turn challenges into opportunities. What once felt like survival is now becoming progress. What once felt like uncertainty is now turning into possibility.

In this time of remembrance, their journey reminds us that resilience is not just about enduring the past—it is about rising, growing, and shaping a better future. These women are not only rebuilding their own lives; they are strengthening their families, uplifting their communities, and becoming role models for the next generation.

Their strength is a living testimony that even in the face of adversity, empowerment can restore dignity, rebuild hope, and create lasting change.

Our cooking class is one of our unique tourism products where visitors learn how to prepare traditional Rwandan dishes while experiencing our culture firsthand. Guests cook alongside community members, share stories, and enjoy the meals together.

This activity has a positive impact on our community by creating jobs, supporting local farmers, and empowering women and youth with income and skills, while preserving our cultural traditions.

In a bright classroom filled with quiet determination, a trainee stood carefully behind his fellow trainee, holding a hairdryer in one hand and a comb in the other. His face showed deep concentration—not just on styling hair, but on mastering a skill that could change his future. Around them, mirrors reflected more than images; they reflected learning, practice, and hope.

This was not just a simple beauty session. It was a moment of growth. The trainee working on the hair was learning step by step, guided by training and experience, while others in the room practiced their own techniques. Every movement mattered. Every attempt was part of becoming better.

In spaces like this, transformation happens through practice. Skills are built with patience. Confidence grows with every session.

Because sometimes, the journey to independence begins when trainees support one another—learning together, improving together, and preparing for brighter opportunities ahead. ✨
