A silverback doesn’t simply choose a female—females are attracted to him based on his strength, leadership, and ability to protect the group. When ready to mate, a female shows interest by staying close, grooming, and following him. The silverback responds if he accepts her, but the choice is mutual and based on trust and safety rather than force. 🌿

WHAT TO DO IF A SILVERBACK GORILLA COMES CLOSER

1. Stay completely calm and still
Do not scream, run, or make sudden movements. Panic signals “threat” to the gorilla.
2. Avoid direct eye contact
In gorilla behavior, staring can be interpreted as a challenge.
3. Lower your body posture
Crouch slightly or sit down calmly. This shows non-aggression.
4. Do NOT touch or approach
Even if it seems calm or curious, keep distance. Let it decide to move away.
5. Follow the guide immediately (if you are in a trek)
In real encounters like in Rwanda’s gorilla trekking areas, the guide’s signals override everything. They are trained for exactly this.
6. Stay in your group
