Standard 4-Day Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Spend a few hours visiting the sobering and beautifully curated Kigali Genocide Memorial. Afterward, take a 2.5 to 3-hour scenic drive north through rolling hills to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze.
Day 2: The Main Gorilla Trek
Wake up early for a hearty breakfast and head to the park headquarters at 7:00 AM for your briefing. Trek through lush bamboo forests for 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas' location. You will spend exactly one magical hour with a habituated gorilla family, observing them in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, you can relax at your lodge or take an optional cultural walk at the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village to experience traditional Rwandan dance and heritage.
Day 3: Second Trek or Golden Monkey Tracking
You can either book a second gorilla permit to track a different family (or experience the same one), or opt to track the endangered Golden Monkeys that live in the park. Alternatively, you can hike the Dian Fossey grave at the Karisoke Research Center.
Day 4: Lake Kivu Excursion & Departure
Before heading back to Kigali, take a scenic drive west to the shores of Lake Kivu for a relaxed morning or a boat cruise. Afterward, you will be driven back to the city or the airport for your onward flight.
Cost & Permitting Breakdown
Gorilla Permits: Each standard gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda costs \(\$1,500\) USD. A second trek will double this cost.
Tour Packages: Full 4-day private tours range from \(\$3,000\) to \(\$4,500+\) USD per person, depending on whether you stay at mid-range or luxury lodges. These packages typically cover all transportation, accommodation, park guides, and permit processing. [
