Gorilla trekking in Uganda from Kigali is a popular, cost-effective alternative to Rwandan treks, offering a 4-5 hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga National Parks compared to 8+ hours from Entebbe. Tourists save on permits—$800 USD in Uganda vs. $1500 USD in Rwanda—and can use a $100 East African Tourist Visa for crossing, often opting for 2-3 day tours to maximize time.

Key Information for Uganda Trekking from Kigali

Permit Cost: $800 USD per person (foreign non-residents) for 2025/2026.

Travel Time: Approximately 4 to 5 hours from Kigali to southern Bwindi or Mgahinga.

Best Time to Visit: Dry seasons (June–August, December–February) offer less slippery hiking trails.

Border Crossing: The Cyanika border (near Kisoro) is commonly used, requiring an East African Tourist Visa ($100).

Logistics: Many operators offer 3-day private tours, but 1-day tours are available (requiring a 3:00 AM start from Kigali).

Itinerary Options
1-Day Trek: Requires a 3:00 AM start, crossing to Mgahinga or Southern Bwindi, trekking, and returning to Kigali by nightfall.

3-Day Trek: Typically includes pick up from Kigali, travel to Bwindi, trekking on Day 2, and returning to Kigali on Day 3.

Why Choose This Route?

Cost Efficiency: Saves $800 on permits alone, plus lower accommodation costs in Uganda.

*Accessibility*: Kigali International Airport (KGL) is the closest airport to the southern gorilla sectors.

Experience: Both Uganda and Rwanda offer similar high-quality trekking experiences within the Virunga region.

Ensure you book your permits months in advance, as they sell out quickly

20/01/2026

The best time to visit Rwanda is during the dry seasons (June-September and December-February) for easier trekking, wildlife viewing, and less rain, with June to September being peak season for gorilla trekking and dry conditions. The wet seasons (March-April, October-November) offer lush green scenery, fewer crowds, and potentially lower costs, though trekking is muddier, making it ideal for budget travelers or photographers who don't mind rain.

Dry Season (June–September & December–February)

Pros: Best for gorilla trekking and wildlife, clearer skies, easier hiking/driving. June-Sept is peak season.

Cons: Higher prices and need to book permits/lodges far in advance.

Best For: Reliable weather, prime wildlife spotting, combining with other East African safaris, general tourism.

Wet Season (March–April & October–November)

Pros: Lush green landscapes, better for photography, fewer people, lower prices, easier permit access.

Cons: Heavy rains can make trails slippery and challenging.

Best For: Budget travelers, photographers, birdwatchers, those wanting solitude.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

June-August: Peak dry season; excellent for trekking, good wildlife.

September: Still dry, but vegetation is vibrant; Kwita Izina (gorilla naming) may occur.

October-November: Short rains begin; great for photography/birding, but expect rain.

December: End of short rains, start of dry season; busy (book ahead).

January-February: Warm, dry, good for hiking and less crowded than mid-year.

March-April: Long rains peak; very muddy, but lush and quiet.
