This timeframe allows for the iconic trek, additional wildlife or cultural activities, and a seamless transit from the capital without feeling rushed.

Standard 4-Day Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Spend a few hours visiting the sobering and beautifully curated Kigali Genocide Memorial. Afterward, take a 2.5 to 3-hour scenic drive north through rolling hills to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze.

Day 2: The Main Gorilla Trek
Wake up early for a hearty breakfast and head to the park headquarters at 7:00 AM for your briefing. Trek through lush bamboo forests for 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas' location. You will spend exactly one magical hour with a habituated gorilla family, observing them in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, you can relax at your lodge or take an optional cultural walk at the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village to experience traditional Rwandan dance and heritage.

Day 3: Second Trek or Golden Monkey Tracking
You can either book a second gorilla permit to track a different family (or experience the same one), or opt to track the endangered Golden Monkeys that live in the park. Alternatively, you can hike the Dian Fossey grave at the Karisoke Research Center.

Day 4: Lake Kivu Excursion & Departure
Before heading back to Kigali, take a scenic drive west to the shores of Lake Kivu for a relaxed morning or a boat cruise. Afterward, you will be driven back to the city or the airport for your onward flight.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda from Kigali is a popular, cost-effective alternative to Rwandan treks, offering a 4-5 hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga National Parks compared to 8+ hours from Entebbe. Tourists save on permits—$800 USD in Uganda vs. $1500 USD in Rwanda—and can use a $100 East African Tourist Visa for crossing, often opting for 2-3 day tours to maximize time.

Key Information for Uganda Trekking from Kigali

Permit Cost: $800 USD per person (foreign non-residents) for 2025/2026.

Travel Time: Approximately 4 to 5 hours from Kigali to southern Bwindi or Mgahinga.

Best Time to Visit: Dry seasons (June–August, December–February) offer less slippery hiking trails.

Border Crossing: The Cyanika border (near Kisoro) is commonly used, requiring an East African Tourist Visa ($100).

Logistics: Many operators offer 3-day private tours, but 1-day tours are available (requiring a 3:00 AM start from Kigali).

Itinerary Options
1-Day Trek: Requires a 3:00 AM start, crossing to Mgahinga or Southern Bwindi, trekking, and returning to Kigali by nightfall.

3-Day Trek: Typically includes pick up from Kigali, travel to Bwindi, trekking on Day 2, and returning to Kigali on Day 3.

Why Choose This Route?

Cost Efficiency: Saves $800 on permits alone, plus lower accommodation costs in Uganda.

*Accessibility*: Kigali International Airport (KGL) is the closest airport to the southern gorilla sectors.

Experience: Both Uganda and Rwanda offer similar high-quality trekking experiences within the Virunga region.

Ensure you book your permits months in advance, as they sell out quickly
