We didn’t take the girls to the DMZ this trip. But we did talk about what it means to have your country divided and to live this close to North Korea. There aren’t many markers of the differences here superficially, but this civil defence training notice was one.

The Hansel and Pretzel German Deli - Review. A little square of Germany in Richmond, London. Authentic and high quality meats, cheeses, breads, cakes and specialty German products. I’d recommend the filling Hansel Burger (which looks like spam, tastes like bliss) with gerkins, crispy onions and brown mustard (for under £5) and the plum strudel (£2.60) which reminds me of Kaiserschmarrn. Not a coincidence it’s located around the corner from the German School.

In a world where I’m not interested in paying for food unless it’s amazing, an experience or includes a view - this is worth it.

Checking crab and lobster traps with a local fisherman off the north coast of Skye was a highlight of the trip to the Highlands. Views of the rugged coastline with the Hebrides in sight — Roney took us out in his boat and shared island stories in his melody of a Scottish accent and taught us how to catch a fish in 30 seconds. Really, it was shocking! “You just have to know where the fish are.” He sent us home with lobsters, but will cook them on the pier if time allows. Unmissable experience if you visit Skye. He’s a jolly grandfather and let the kids drive the boat, but I watched him turn and break a fish in half to bait the lobster trap. He’s the real deal. He doesn’t have website, but I can give you his details if you make it up to Dunvegan.

Camping Skye review: fantastic, basic site in Broadford (less than 5 miles from the Skye Bridge). Tasteful Scandi timbered buildings, including a communal yurt for eating or playing games out of the elements. Very clean toilet block and easy check-in. No pitch assignment. Perfect overnight stop. One of the two Co-ops on the island is nearby in Broadford for supplies. Location worked for us because we did an evening drive across the Highlands from Edinburgh and wanted to make camp on Skye before driving north. Only minor issue is that there is construction this summer for new pitches, but no work during our brief stay.

The Fairy Pools are a series of mini ponds in an extended rambling waterfall. An easy trail follows the water up the hills into a ravine. On a hot day, you can have your own little swimming hole. Great hike for kids. We brought a picnic and were easily able to have our pool. There’s a toilet block at the car park.
