Throwback of our last group in London: The Friends of the National World War II

In the Wake of the Allies!

On Saturday, The Friends of the National World War II Memorial “Victory in Europe” tour with Friends' Resident Historian Alex Kershaw continued as we followed the Allied invasion route from towards Portsmouth.

After arriving in Portsmouth, we visited the “The D- Day Story” (formerly the D-Day Museum) which is dedicated to telling the story of the June 1944 Allied Invasion through unique personal stories.

The group kept travelling, following in the wake of the invasion of the troops, they boarded a ferry to cross the Channel to Ouistreham, the port city of Caen.

Throwback of our last group in London: The Friends of the National World War II

London at War!

On Friday, The Friends of the National World War II Memorial “Victory in Europe” tour with Alex Kershaw continued as we discovered London during World War II and the secrets hidden beneath the streets of Westminster in the underground nerve center where Winston Churchill and his inner circle directed the Second World War.

We traveled south of the River Thames to Britain’s finest military museum, the Imperial War Museum.
We then visited Churchill’s underground war rooms at Whitehall, winding our way through the labyrinth, for an up-close-and-personal look, of rooms and corridors that stretch below Westminster that sheltered Winston Churchill and his war cabinet from the German bombing raids.

We ended our day with a garden view dinner at The Goring Hotel, one of the Royal Family’s favorite hotels. We dined in the private Garden Room which features a sliding wall of glass, leading out to the famous Goring Gardens.

Throwback of our last group in London: The Friends of the National World War II

Last Thursday we kicked off the Friends of the National World War II Memorial “Victory in Europe” tour -- a weeklong journey led New York Times best-selling author and Friends' Resident Historian Alex Kershaw, following in the footsteps of thousands of young Americans who fought their way across Europe 79 years ago to bring freedom to millions.

We explored Grosvenor Square, the heart of the American presence in London during World War II.

We concluded the first day at The Punch Bowl, a traditional English pub.
