MY FIRST JOURNEY ABROAD TAUGHT ME WHAT ADMISSION LETTERS DON’T.

When I left for Thailand in 2015, I thought the hardest part was getting admitted.

I was wrong.

Nobody prepared me for what happened after I arrived.

The unfamiliar environment.

Different culture.

Different academic expectations.

Learning how systems worked.

Managing life away from home.

Making decisions without family around.

Figuring things out when something went wrong.

There were moments I genuinely wished someone had told me beforehand:

“This is what life abroad can actually feel like.”

That experience changed the way I look at international education today.

Because getting someone admitted is only the beginning.

Before a student leaves home, they need to understand the life they are travelling into.

Where will you live?

How will you manage your first months?

What happens when you feel isolated?

How do you navigate a different academic culture?

How do you build relationships?

How do you find professional opportunities?

What happens when reality doesn’t match the picture you saw online?

These questions matter.

I learned many of these lessons through experience and some were difficult lessons.

That’s why I don’t believe international education should be reduced to:

Admission + visa + flight.

The real journey begins after the flight lands.

Today, my own experience in Thailand and later Europe influences how I counsel students: prepare for the destination, not just the departure.

THE VISA IS NOT THE FUTURE

The visa approval email can feel like everything you have been waiting for.

I know that feeling.

I studied abroad in Thailand and later Sweden, so I understand the excitement of finally getting the opportunity to leave home.

But here is the reality many students discover too late:

Getting there and succeeding there are two completely different things.

The first few weeks can feel amazing.

Then the bills arrive.

Classes become demanding.

You realise nobody is coming to organise your life for you.

You need to understand the transport system, manage your money, make friends, handle academic pressure, find opportunities and eventually figure out what happens after graduation.

And sometimes, you look around and quietly ask:

“What am I actually going to do with this opportunity?”

That is why your preparation shouldn’t end with visa approval.

Before you travel, prepare for the life you are entering, not just the airport you are landing in.

Understand your responsibilities.

Build financial discipline.

Research your environment.

Learn how students actually access opportunities.

Develop useful skills.

Build relationships.

And don’t be ashamed to ask for help when you genuinely need it.

International education can open doors—but you still have to learn how to walk through them.

My own journey from Nigeria → Thailand → Sweden taught me that surviving abroad requires more than academic ability.

It requires adaptability, responsibility and the willingness to keep learning.

So celebrate your visa.

Absolutely.

But then ask the more important question:

“How am I going to make this opportunity change my life?”

THE COUNTRY YOU CHOOSE TODAY MAY NOT HAVE THE SAME RULES WHEN YOU GRADUATE.

One of the most dangerous assumptions in studying abroad is:

“If this pathway works now, it will still work when I finish.”

But international education is connected to immigration policy, labour markets and government priorities and those can change.

Recent OECD reporting shows that countries continue to adjust international-student policies, including post-study work conditions, eligibility requirements and pathways after graduation.

So when choosing a country, don’t research only:

“Can I get a student visa?”

Research:

“What happens if the rules change while I am there?”

Before committing, investigate:

• What are the current post-study work conditions?
• What happens if those conditions change?
• How long would I realistically have to find qualifying employment?
• Does my intended occupation require licensing?
• Could my career work in another country if my original plan changes?
• Am I building skills that remain valuable beyond one immigration system?

Build a PLAN B that isn’t another visa.

Your backup should include career flexibility, not just another destination.

Develop transferable technical skills.

Build genuine work experience.

Maintain professional relationships.

Keep your documents organised.

Understand opportunities in more than one labour market.

Follow official policy updates instead of relying on old social-media posts.

And don’t choose a country solely because someone promises an “easy pathway” to permanent residence.

Your education should give you something more durable than a temporary immigration opportunity.

It should give you skills, qualifications and experience that can travel with you.

Before choosing a country, ask:

“If the immigration rules change tomorrow, will the education and career I am building still have value?”

If the answer is no, you may be planning around a policy rather than building around a career.

Policies can change. Your preparation should be stronger than the policy.
