Late summer has its own pace in Halland on the Swedish west coast.

The days are a little quieter, the evenings a little softer, and there’s no real reason to hurry anywhere. Follow a quiet forest path, find a place by the water or simply stay where you are for a little longer.

Summer is slowly changing. And that’s perfectly fine. There’s still plenty to enjoy.

A recent Swedish study explored what contributes to people’s wellbeing. The results showed that people living in Halland, on Sweden’s west coast, reported the highest wellbeing in the country.

The study looked at several factors connected to wellbeing, including demographics, personality and social relationships.

Late summer in Halland, on the Swedish west coast, comes with a very Swedish tradition: the Kräftskiva.

A Kräftskiva, or crayfish party, is a late-summer gathering traditionally centred around freshwater crayfish, with plenty of dill, bread and cheese, colourful decorations and those unmistakable paper hats. A small glass of snaps and a drinking song or two are also often part of the celebration.

Here on the Swedish west coast, we sometimes give the tradition a local twist and add langoustines to the table. One place to find them is Träslövsläge (or “Läjet”, as the locals call it), where fishing and seafood are part of everyday life.

Then take your time. Eat, talk, laugh and stay a little longer.
That’s what late-summer evenings in Halland are for.
