Autumn is a lovely time for a little adventure in Halland, on Sweden’s west coast.

In Sweden, schools have a week-long autumn break around the end of October, called höstlov. A perfect excuse to get out, explore and enjoy the season together.

Wander through historic places, enjoy the fresh sea air, discover something new and find a little Halloween magic along the way.

A little excitement, a little history and, of course, a Swedish fika. Sometimes the best days are the ones without too much of a plan.

History in Halland, on the Swedish west coast, isn’t always tucked away behind museum doors. Sometimes it’s right there in the streets, buildings and traditions that are still part of everyday life.

Varbergs fästning stands on a site once fought over by Swedish and Danish armies. Halmstad slott was built for a Danish king. And Tjolöholms slott brought a touch of British architecture to the Swedish countryside.

At Äskhults by, you can get a glimpse of rural life in the 18th century. In Gamla stan in Falkenberg, traces of the town’s past are still visible. And at BoMu - Bonadsmuseum Unnaryd, traditional folk art is still very much alive.

At Kallbadhuset i Varberg, Varberg’s tradition of seaside bathing stretches back around 200 years. And at Skottorps slott, a Swedish king married a Danish princess in 1680.

Halland in numbers. A small introduction to our region on Sweden’s west coast.

Around two hours from Copenhagen. Barely four hours from Oslo. Six municipalities. About 400 kilometres of coastline. More than 3,000 islands. And a few centuries of Danish history thrown in.

This Sunday, Sweden celebrates one of its most beloved traditions: Cinnamon Bun Day.

Here in Halland, we have a surprisingly long history with the Swedish kanelbulle. Back in 1867, a bakery in Halmstad advertised cinnamon buns in the local newspaper Hallandsposten for just 3, 4 and 5 öre each.
⠀
We don’t know exactly what those early buns looked or tasted like. But almost 160 years later, the cinnamon bun is still very much part of Swedish fika culture.

When you’re exploring Halland, stop by a local café or bakery for a kanelbulle.

Harvest time is here in Halland on the west coast of Sweden.

Across the region, fields, and gardens are busy with the season’s harvest. And this is the time of year when much of it finds its way to farm shops, markets, kitchens and tables.

Take part in food events, local markets and harvest celebrations across Halland. Taste what’s in season, meet local producers or simply make a stop at a farm shop along the way.

There’s more to Halland than the coast. Head inland and the landscape changes to forests, quiet trails and moss-covered ground. The Hallandsleden trail takes you right through it.

Listen to the birds and the wind in the trees, take in the scent of the forest floor and keep an eye out for chanterelles, Sweden’s forest gold. Thanks to Sweden’s Right of Public Access, you’re free to explore nature and pick wild mushrooms, as long as you treat nature and wildlife with care. Special rules may apply in protected areas.

PS. Only pick mushrooms you can identify with certainty. And remember: no walk in the woods is complete without a fika. 🤍

Late summer has its own pace in Halland on the Swedish west coast.

The days are a little quieter, the evenings a little softer, and there’s no real reason to hurry anywhere. Follow a quiet forest path, find a place by the water or simply stay where you are for a little longer.

Summer is slowly changing. And that’s perfectly fine. There’s still plenty to enjoy.

A recent Swedish study explored what contributes to people’s wellbeing. The results showed that people living in Halland, on Sweden’s west coast, reported the highest wellbeing in the country.

The study looked at several factors connected to wellbeing, including demographics, personality and social relationships.
