Grand finale...

After visiting the Hinlopen Strait, the pack ice, and the north-west corner of Spitzbergen, we headed back south to Isfjord due to wind and weather. Finding protection in the many fjords, we explored during the final days of our expedition.

Walruses, icebergs, landscapes, and more distant polar bears filled the last days. Fantastic sightings and experiences with wildlife, landscapes, and camraderie par excellence.

And I’ll be back. My time onboard the Stockholm goes beyond work. It’s become my way of life. Some people may think it strange to spend so much time in the far north, the arctic.

Perhaps it is. To some it may seem simply to be a cold, desolate, empty place. But to me, it is full of life. You have to look for it. Yet it is there nonetheless.

All I know is that these wild, raw, beautiful places engages something deep in my soul. Simple, peaceful, calm. Peace within the chaos. Calmness within the storm. Simplicity in a complicated world.

And the Stockholm is more than a workplace. An incredibly strong steel hull that can handle thick pack ice, the beautiful original wooden bridge that has become iconic over the years, and the cozy, family-like atmosphere with the crew brings this vessel to life.

Some weekends stay with you forever… like sipping a cocktail under the Arctic sky, standing on the frozen sea. These magical moments are from our latest expedition with M/S Stockholm in Svalbard.

And so it goes...

Another successful expedition done, and so another begins.

This time we headed north from Longyearbyen.

First exploring the north-west corner of Spitzbergen, with its iconic landscapes doused in flat calm reflections.

The first walruses hauling out on melted sandy beaches, with patches of snow still reaching near the shoreline.

Harbour seals perched on their comfortable soft rocks at low tide, calmly watching as we gently cruised by.

A female polar bear walking along the fast ice, ignoring us as we continued onwards towards the north-east.

Pack ice.

And also the first icebergs being released from their winter freeze in the sea ice, drifting their way out into open seas and to their eventual demise of melt.

Arctic foxes, some still in their white winter fur, but slowly changing to their brown and grey summer coats.

Spring is coming...

Springtime in Svalbard is truly something special. Here are some moments captured by our guide Beau Pruneau during our recent expedition with M/S Stockholm.

All good things come to an end...

After an eventful evening anchored alongside the ice edge, we continued scouting along the various fjords within Isfjord.

Beautiful ice patterns, opportunities to scale the mast and look out from the crows nest, landing with the zodiacs on an ice floe, and experiencing another ice bear was all on the agenda.

More harp seals swam by, eider ducks flew by, and beautiful reflectionscapes became the normal day to day scenery. Lectures about polar bears and sea ice kept us entertained during slower afternoons.

But one constant is always there.

The cozy MS Stockholm, our home away from home.

Superb ice strength, unique capabilities not offered by many other ships, and classic Swedish lines from this all-original lighthouse support vessel from 1953.

The beautiful original wooden bridge remains a recognizable sight.

Nothing is perfect in this world. But my love of the polar regions, for wild places, for raw beauty, for peace amongst the chaos, never changes.

For now, I continue on this polar journey.

Until next time.

The Svalbard season is now underway! Our guide Beau Pruneu reports from the first days of the first full Svalbard expedition on board M/S Stockholm.

An epic start...

The first full Svalbard expedition of the season.

We left Longyearbyen, intent on wild and raw scenes.

The pack ice.

We headed south, to the dense ice in Storfjorden.

Spending nearly 3 days, we scouted the ice for wildlife.

Walrus, harp seals, and bearded seals graced us with their presence.

We parked in the ice and drifted overnight, while colorful sunsets graced the sky.

The king of the Arctic, the king of Svalbard, failed to appear however.

But Svalbard is so much more than the wildlife.

Spending multiple days deep in the pack ice, experiencing incredible sunsets while one drifts with the wind and currents. Something unique to traveling on a small ice-strengthened ship like the MS Stockholm.

Note: all wildlife shot from a respectful distance, with a telephoto lens, showing respect for nature.

We love M/S Stockholm — and we’re not the only ones!

Just look at the number of returning guests — and guides! Here, our onboard guide Beau Pruneau shares his thoughts on the family-like atmosphere among the crew. It’s one of the many things that makes this little ship so special.

Ship family...

A big reason me and .engelke work on the .s.stockholm so much is the crew.

More than colleagues, more than team members, we are a ship family, helping and supporting each other through the good days, and the rough days.

My Swedish ship family.

Whether we’re anchoring mooring lines on ice edges, launching zodiacs for operations, or sharing a laugh on the bridge after a long successful day.

The crew onboard keeps us coming back.

Working together to create the best overall polar experiences we can for PolarQuest guests and charters.

A huge thank you to all of them.

Leaving Tromsø behind, with a full fuel tank and full bellies, we headed north away from the Norwegian coast.

A last contingent of white-beaked dolphins swam playfully alongside us as we sailed out of the fjords and archipelago of islands.

Due north.

A full day at sea awaited us. Rolling waves, soaring fulmars, and another dolphin kept us company as we rocked and rolled our way towards Bjørnøya.

Bear Island.

Arriving, we pushed our way through a belt of ice along the coastline of the island.

We zodiac cruised massive bird cliffs, reaching over 300 meters in height above us.

We landed and hiked in deep snow above nesting fulmars.

Success, as Bjørnøya is often an untouchable jewel of the north. An exposed island, often wrought with raging storms, and dense fog.

This time we succeeded.

We then headed further north.

Svalbard.

The kingdom of ice.

Pushing our way deep into the pack ice in the south of the island archipelago, we scouted and absorbed the peaceful silence of a wild, raw, and beautiful place.

Wildlife such as seals, walruses, reindeer, ptarmigan, king eiders, and belugas kept us company as we enjoyed the last days of our epic journey in the far north.

From Bergen, to Longyearbyen.

Norway, Bjørnøya, and Svalbard. A special trip in many ways. Diversity par excellence.

Until next year.

Heading north...

The second part of our coastal Norway expedition.

We arrived at Torghatten in wind and rain, an infamous mountain with a hole through it.

Not to be deterred, we used our zodiacs and hiked through the cave, as the rain subsided to beautiful views.

We then sailed to the Lofoten Islands, a chain of islands spread out along the coast of northern Norway.

Starting in Reine, a picturesque village with a backdrop of cod drying racks and red houses.

Then moving on to Nusfjord, a famous little village with a mix of yellow and red houses. We then hiked along the infamous ’Fishermans’ trail, a 6km long one-way goat path along the coast and mountains that runs from Nusfjord to a neighboring village of Auster Nesland.

Next stop Henningsvær, a town with a rather famous soccer field out on an outcrop of rock island at the edge of town.

On the way to our next destination, we were again distracted by a pod of orcas that swam westward, traveling along the coast hunting for herring.

After spending time enjoying a close encounter with the orcas, we headed to Trollfjord, an extremely narrow fjord cut into the sheer rock. Home to many white-tailed sea eagles, we watched as they soared on thermals along the cliff face, ever watchful for fish near the surface to dive down upon.

It was then time to head north to Tromsø, our last stop in Norway to replenish our stocks before leaving the coast to head further north to Bjørnøya and beyond, Svalbard.

The kingdom of ice awaits...

. .

A successful start...

From Bergen, Norway, along the Norwegian coast. Final destination? Svalbard.

4 days into our first Arctic expedition of the season, onboard the .s.stockholm with .

From Bergen we headed north, stopping by the bird cliffs of Runde, visiting the historic seaside town of Ålesund, and spending the evening at the small picturesque village of Øye.

Heading eastward in the middle of the night, we were greeted by an incredible display of northern lights, dancing across the sky in colors of green, pink, and purple.

We then explored the famous area of Geirangerfjord, first the settlement and then hiking up to a viewpoint at Skageflå. One of the most well-known and beautiful fjords in Norway.

Afterwards sailing overnight to the quaint abandoned fishing village of Grip, the remaining houses on the tiny exposed island of rock being used as summer houses.

Leaving Grip behind, we headed towards Kjeugskjærfyr, a beautiful old lighthouse along the central coast.

However mother nature had other plans, as orcas were spotted before passing by the lightshouse. Two pods swam back and forth, herding schools of fish into tighter groups to feed upon.

Passing Kjeugskjærfyr, we headed further north along the coast, ever northwards...

A fantastic start to our season.

Our Story

Established in 1999, PolarQuest is a world leading operator of small ship expedition cruises in Svalbard. Our three expedition ships are built for Arctic waters, are comfortable and take a maximum of 12 or 53 passengers. This is how we offer an entirely different experience from what you get on a larger and more conventional cruise ship. With such a small ship, we are able to reach some of the most inaccessible and remote areas, maximise the time ashore and venture into small fjords. Every expedition is unique and our aim is that each passenger will have the trip of a lifetime. We also offer expeditions to Antarctica and the gems in between. Welcome on board!
