KirunaHusky
Dog sledding is a silent and environmently friendly way of travelling through the snow covered wilderness around Kiruna and Swedish Lapland. Steering a dog sled is not difficult to learn and our experienced guides will explain how to control the sled - and more importantly - how to apply the brake! You will quickly adjust to driving a dog sled and will thoroughly enjoy the ride. Of c
ourse on short tours you may also sit comfortably on the sled and let one of the guides do the driving for you. Alaskan huskies are born to run in extreme weather conditions. A lot of training and plenty of quality dogfood make them the friendly canine athletes, waiting for you to lift your foot off the brake and send them onto the snowy trail. Our sled dogs are very social and like to be petted by you. They can transform from adorable pets to unstoppable running mashines within a blink of an eye. Meet these great characters in their element and let them show you Swedish Lapland at its best. KirunaHusky's operating area is about 25 minutes drive south west of Kiruna. South of the river Kalix we find a remote environment without other tourist companies. We run a small business with 34 Alaskan Huskies. Being a smaller kennel and tour operator allows us to spend a lot of time with each individual dog and create a family atmosphere with our guests. In summertime our huskies can run free on the big yard and cool down in the lake behind the house. Visit us also in summer time. Watching so many dogs running freely is always a special sight. Alternatively in autumn you can join us when we train the husky teams with an ATV. Autumn training starts at the beginning of August, if the temperature and humidity allows it. OUR TOUR PROGRAM
We have a variety of tour programs for you, your friends and family. Most of our tours offer the opportunity to drive a dog sled with two people sharing one sled. However if you prefer sitting on the dog sled of the guide/musher as a passenger this is also possible. Our dog sled tours start daily with the pick up from your hotel/hostel in Kiruna at 9am, 2:30pm or 6:30pm. After about a 25 minutes drive towards Nikkaluokta and Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise, we reach our husky kennel by the Kalix River. Here we provide you with warm winter clothing before we start our dog sledding tour. The guide gives you detailed instructions about the dog sled and the huskies before we attach our sled dogs to the line sections in front of the sled. With the dogs and all drivers in position the guide loosens the knot that secures the dog sled. ”YA” short command from the back of the dog sled assures the huskies that it’s time to run. At a good pace we leave the husky kennel behind and make for a unforgetable day on the dog sled in the snowy wilderness along the Kalix River. We follow the trail through forrests, across small lakes and open areas, enjoying the breathtaking view over the landscape of Swedish Lapland, covered in snow. We stop at a camp site by the trail and have coffee or hot chocolate. Try reindeer meat and other local specialties by a warming campfire, sitting on cosy reindeer skins. Our guides will share their knowledge about our sled dogs and the culture in Swedish Lapland and Kiruna. We show you simple ways of making fire and teach methods about how to keep warm in the arctic cold. After getting to know our huskies a little better and maybe taking pictures with them, we hit the trail again and enjoy more dog sledding. For more information don't hesitate to contact us!
