May can feel like a quiet time in Kiruna, as the snow melts and the landscape slowly comes back to life. But in Sápmi, this is one of the most intense periods of the year, especially for reindeer herding.

During May, reindeer calves are born, and this is even reflected in the language: many Sámi names for the month relate directly to calving. The females instinctively return to their traditional calving grounds, often snow-free areas in the low mountains, where they can give birth in as undisturbed an environment as possible.

Peace and quiet are essential. If a female becomes stressed, she may abandon her calf, leaving it unprotected and highly vulnerable to predators.

🎬 Missa inte den helt nya, underbart vackra dokumentärserien som följer livet i byn Karesuando med utgångspunkt från byns lokala metropol - Macken.

Paris har Eiffeltornet, New York har Frihetsgudinnan, London har Big Ben och Karesuando har... Macken, Karesuandos hjärta, nav och epicenter. Alla vet var den ligger, alla har varit där, och på macken finns allt att köpa.

I den här serien följer vi de som bor i Sveriges nordligaste tätort under ett år. Vi kommer få se Karesuando både under de dagar då spottet inte ens hinner landa på marken innan det blir till is, och under ljusa, ljumma sommarnätter när solen fortfarande lyser dygnet runt och älven är blank. Och såklart, bröderna Sven och Mats som äger macken. Det de inte vet om Karesuando och de människorna som bor där, behöver ingen veta.

We are now in the middle of the wonderful season of Spring winter 💙 The sun rises before 5 a.m. and doesn’t set until around 9 p.m. Temperatures rise above freezing during the day, while the nights still stay below zero, letting us enjoy the snow a little longer.

It truly is beautiful to see our landscapes in sunlight and snow 🥰
