The Northern Lights don’t care if there’s snow on the ground.

These photos were taken in November, before winter had fully arrived in Swedish Lapland.

In fact, early season Aurora trips often mean darker skies, fewer people, easier access, and surprisingly comfortable temperatures.

Aurora season starts in October, not when the snow arrives.

Every winter, thousands of people see the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Kiruna frozen, glowing, and alive.
Very few ever see this part.

As the Arctic moves into summer, the ice slowly returns to the river it came from. The walls soften, the sculptures fade, and another winter season quietly comes to an end.

It’s a reminder that nothing here is permanent — and maybe that’s what makes it so special.

Now the midnight sun takes over, the snow disappears into the mountains, and the north slows down for summer. Months from now, when the darkness and cold eventually return, the Icehotel will be rebuilt once again from the ice of the Torne River.

The Arctic is always changing. That’s the beauty of it.

Some of the best moments in the Arctic aren’t about speed… they’re about slowing down.

Out on the frozen lake, fire crackling, fresh coffee in hand, something warm on the grill, good music playing, and nothing around us but snow, silence, and wide open space.

This is why our sleigh experiences are becoming one of my favourite ways to explore. No stress of driving, no rushing, no noise. Just sit back, take in the views, capture photos, talk, laugh, and enjoy the journey together.

Some things are worth doing the old way.
This coyote fur collar was handmade for my winter parka by Karin Vasara, a local craftswoman here in Kiruna. Real skill, real warmth, made for real Arctic winters.

Her shop still stands in the old town — one of the last parts untouched by the mine. Inside, you’ll find traditional, handcrafted pieces, each one unique and built with purpose. Supporting local hands, local knowledge, and stories that belong here. ❄️
