A large, Earth-facing solar event occurred on Jan 7, 2014. The effects of this event should reach Earth sometime on the 9th of January. Our short term forecast is not available, so you should watch the Current Aurora Activity panel at the Auroral Forecast website: http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast

Forecast: Auroral activity will be low. Weather permitting, low-level displays will be visible overhead in Tromsø, Norway and Reykjavik, Iceland, and visible low on the northern horizon from as far south as Umea, Sweden, Trondheim, Norway, and the Faeroe Islands, Denmark.

There was a solar event on the 17th of May that should lead to Kp index greater than 4 on the 18th through the 20th. Check the short term forecast at the auroral forecast site www.gi.alaska.edu/Auroraforecast.
Note that the sunlight during the night North of about 62 degrees latitude will prevent observers from seeing this event. For Observers south of this latitude in the US and southern Canada, the viewing should be good.
A high index of 5 has already begun and the aurora is not visible from PA (where the auroral forecaster is located now), but only because of clouds on the north horizon. Observers in Tasmania and southern New Zealand should see it on the southern horizon.

Forecast: Auroral activity will be high. Weather permitting, highly active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Barrow to Bethel, Dillingham and Ketchikan, and visible low on the horizon from King Salmon.

Another solar event took place on the 13th of March. The effects from this event on the aurora could occur as early as 10am on the 15th in time for the magnetic midnight in Alaska at 2am (AKDT) in the morning of the 15th. The best auroras will probably occur in the night of the 16th/17th. The effects of the large coronal hole facing Earth right now will probably be seen on the night of the 17th/18th.

21/01/2012

AURORA ALERT Three solar events occurred on Jan 18/19, 2012. The first two were small and of short duration. The last one was a coronal mass ejection associated with a long-duration solar flare from the northeast quadrant of the Sun. The location is such that the event is not facing Earth directly, but the intensity, duration and development are such that it will lead to increased auroral activity on this weekend.

The shock and the effects should reach Earth as early as 6 am GMT the 21st. That is approximately 10 hours from the time of this message. We should expect K=4 or greater auroral activity starting late on the night of the 20th in Alaska and North America and on the 21st in Russia and Europe.

Some predictions are for late on the 21st and early on the 22nd (UT or GMT). Watch the short term forecast with a map of your area for a one hour warning.
