Sweden's fäbodleden—or fäbod trail—is a hidden gem among European trails. Cool even during summer heatwaves, this walking route covers about 120 miles (193 kilometers) of woodlands, clear lakes, and wildberry meadows. The hiking route was recently upgraded with new signage and informational material after the area's farmsteads, known as fäbodar, were granted UNESCO Cultural Heritage status in 2024.

Daniel Nature Guide in National Geographic!

We’re incredibly happy and proud that Daniel Nature Guide had the opportunity to guide journalist Rory along the Fäbodleden trail.

Her experience has now become a wonderful article in National Geographic, where she explores Sweden’s unique fäbod culture, the landscape and the Fäbodleden trail with me as her guide — and why Dalarna could be an exciting destination for those looking for a cooler summer holiday.

Since 2024, Sweden’s fäbod culture has been included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is a living tradition where people, animals, nature, knowledge and stories are still closely connected — a cultural heritage that is truly special to this part of Sweden.

And perhaps Dalarna is more relevant than ever as a destination. As parts of Central and Southern Europe experience increasingly hot summers, hiking through the forests, summer pasture landscapes and cultural heritage of Dalarna offers something very different. 🌿

A coolcation combining nature and culture!
