In Thai, the name Tham Nam Lot literally means “a cave with water flowing through it.” Across Thailand, there are several caves with this name. But deep in Southern Thailand, hidden between mountains and rainforest, there is one that offers a journey unlike anywhere else.
This cave lies along the border between Nakhon Si Thammarat and Trang, connecting the two provinces through a hidden underground passage. On the Trang side, it is known as Tham Wang Phraya Phichai Songkhram, while the entrance from Nakhon Si Thammarat is called Tham Nam Lot.
The journey begins from the Nakhon Si Thammarat side, where local guides provide kayaks and lead visitors gently along a calm stream flowing toward the mountain. The water moves slowly and safely, making the experience accessible even for beginners.
As the cave entrance appears ahead, the atmosphere changes immediately.
The mouth of the cave is enormous — dark, mysterious, and almost cinematic. A stream disappears directly into the mountain, vanishing into the shadows. Paddling into the darkness feels like entering another world.
But only for a moment.
Soon, the cave opens into a vast hidden chamber. Towering ceilings rise dozens of meters overhead, revealing dramatic rock formations shaped over thousands of years. Stalactites and stalagmites emerge from the darkness, illuminated softly by reflected light from the water below.
And then comes the true highlight.
Deep inside the cave lies another giant chamber where sunlight pours through a natural opening high above. Around midday, the sun aligns perfectly with the shaft, sending a beam of light dramatically through the darkness onto the cave floor below. Mist, water, and stone combine into a scene that feels almost unreal.
Rather than returning the same way, the kayaking route continues through the mountain and exits from the opposite side — emerging into the forests of Trang Province.
It is not simply a cave visit.
It feels like travelling through the heart of the mountain itself.
Tham Nam Lot Cave is located in Thung Song district, 80 km from Nakhon Is Thammarat city and 75 km from Trang city.
