Midsummer is one of Sweden’s most important holidays. It is celebrated on a Friday in late June, close to the longest day of the year.
Many Swedes celebrate outdoors with family and friends. They raise a midsummer pole, dance around it and eat traditional food such as herring, potatoes, sour cream, chives and strawberries. Many also drink snaps and sing short drinking songs.
For many people, Midsummer marks the beginning of summer. Cities can feel quiet, as many Swedes leave for the countryside, the archipelago, parks or gardens.
