BISHAN: KAMPONG SAN TENG WALKING TOUR
Sun, 28th Sept 2025
9am to 12pm

In the early 20th century, no one in their right mind would buy a house built on a former graveyard – let alone on a grave itself. The taboo of death and burial grounds loomed large, and such land was often avoided well into the late 1900s. Many still recall the ghost stories that once haunted Bishan, particularly tales surrounding Bishan MRT station.

So, when news broke that Kampong San Teng would be redeveloped into a new HDB estate, the announcement was met with scepticism. Some swore they would never “sleep on top of a grave”.

Yet, history had already offered an example to the contrary. In 1958, Mr. Tang Choon Keng – better known as the founder of CK Tang – proved that being near a former graveyard wasn’t necessarily bad luck. His store once stood beside a Teochew cemetery, which was later redeveloped into the illustrious Ngee Ann City. Yes – the Ngee Ann Building sits on what was once a burial ground.

Ghosts or no ghosts, Bishan today is one of Singapore’s most sought-after HDB estates. In fact, some flats here have sold for over $1 million. The kampong houses, rural scenery, and rows of graves are long gone – but the story of how Bishan transformed from taboo land to prime real estate is nothing short of remarkable.

On this walk, we’ll uncover Bishan’s history and explore how the tables turned in favour of land once considered undesirable. We’ll also discuss the future of other former cemetery sites like Bidadari and Bukit Brown. Will they follow Bishan’s path to success?

Meeting Point:
Bishan MRT Station, Exit C, 9am, Sun, 28 Sept 2025. Look for me near Toast Box – I’ll likely be having breakfast there. You’ll spot me by my Tourist Guide badge.

Expected end time: 12pm (possibly 12.30pm).

Join us for a walk that blends ghostly tales, bold developments, and a fascinating lesson in how Singapore reshapes its landscapes – and its superstitions.

PERANAKAN CULTURE AT JOO CHIAT & KATONG
Sat, 27th Sept 2025
9am to 12pm

Most Asians have some idea of what “Peranakan” means – but not many know exactly how or when this unique culture began. There was a time when being Peranakan meant you were “one cut above the rest”. Today, that fine distinction has faded.

Some believe the Peranakan story began after the founding of modern Singapore, when immigrants from across the region settled here. Others trace it further back, to the 15th century, when the beautiful Hang Li Po became the fifth wife of the Sultan of Malacca. She arrived with an entourage of 500 – including many elegant women and honourable men – who married into the local community. From these unions emerged a distinctive culture of fashion, cuisine, and traditions.

History also records that other immigrants arrived in the region as early as the 10th century. All these influences shaped what we now call Peranakan culture. Sadly, the number of true-blue Peranakans living the traditional lifestyle has declined sharply. The fall began after World War II, and by the 1970s and 1980s, the last of the old-guard Nonyas and Babas were fading from daily life.

Yet, the Peranakan legacy must be preserved. At its height, it fostered a strong sense of unity, pride, and refinement. Even today, we can still enjoy its greatest gifts – particularly its rich cuisine. Peranakan food remains vibrant, but I wish the same could be said of its distinctive fashion: the sarong kebaya, with its elegant, embroidered blouse, speaks volumes without a word.

Thankfully, the Singapore Tourism Board has embraced the Peranakan heritage, especially after the success of the local TV series The Little Nonya (2008), which captured audiences as far away as China – and could easily charm the Western world too.

Join us for a morning walk through Joo Chiat and Katong – neighbourhoods that still hold traces of this once-flourishing culture. Along the way, we’ll see beautifully preserved shophouses, discover the influences behind their colourful facades, and hear stories of the people who lived here.

Meeting Point:
Joo Chiat Complex, 9am, Sat, 27 Sept 2025.

End Point:
East Coast Road, around 12pm – just in time to enjoy some Peranakan delights for lunch.

Step back in time and rediscover a culture that shaped Singapore’s identity – and still has much to offer today.

CONCUBINES & MISTRESSES: BUKIT PASOH WALKING TOUR
Sun, 21st Sept 2025
9am to 12pm

Consorts, concubines, mistresses, secret lovers, and wives – all connected by love, affection… and desire. Throughout history, one truth has remained: life is rarely equal. Of them all, the wife traditionally holds the most important role – managing the household and keeping order. The others? Their duties were different, their responsibilities lighter, and for many, their role was simply to provide pleasure.

It might sound old-fashioned, but the tradition of concubines and mistresses didn’t vanish with emperors and kings – it has lingered quietly into modern times. Some affairs were closely guarded secrets; others were “open secrets” whispered about but never confronted. Singapore was no exception, and certain areas became known as discreet havens where “men of distinction” kept the women who caught their eye.

Welcome to Bukit Pasoh – today a street of beautifully conserved shophouses, but once home to many women who lived comfortably thanks to wealthy benefactors. Their success depended on mastering the delicate “Art of Affection and Care” – a skill that might seem simple, but was far from easy.

On this leisurely stroll, we’ll explore this short yet storied street, imagining what life was like for a concubine or mistress. We’ll also play with definitions – what exactly is the difference between a consort, a concubine, a mistress, a secret lover, and a wife?

Meeting Point:
Outram Park MRT Station, Exit 4 (street level, towards Dorsett Hotel), 9am, Sun, 21 Sept 2025.

End Point:
Eng Hoon Street – once another hot spot, nicknamed “Mistresses Lane”. We’ll take a bus from Bukit Pasoh Road to Eng Hoon Street, so please bring your bus card.

Expected end time is around 11.30am, possibly 12pm.

Join us for a walk that blends history, gossip, and a touch of romance – uncovering a side of Singapore’s past that was as much about social status as it was about love.

BIG, BAD CHINATOWN WALKING TOUR
Sat, 20th Sept 2025
9am to 12pm

Your ole Uncle Chris was born in 1954 – a turbulent time when certain Hokkien expletives (yes, that one) were everyday street talk. At school, we were told only the “good” stories about our forefathers – the hardworking, respectable side. But no one told us about the naughty things they did. That’s where I come in.

On this tour, I’ll share the secrets, the scandals, and yes – how they pulled it off. Not everyone in Chinatown was a good boy, and not every girl was a good girl either. The back lanes and hidden corners were alive with social ills, where rough language was used to curse, provoke, and assert dominance. Some even mistake these vulgar phrases for Singlish today – but trust me, they are far older and far ruder.

Yet, it wasn’t all bad. There were happy days too. By the late 1900s, life had changed. The Peranakans brought colour and joy to the district, ensuring life wasn’t just about toil. Cabarets, o***m dens, and entertainers in figure-hugging cheongsams set the tone for sultry nights. All you had to do was take the lift to the 4th floor of The Great Southern Hotel, or slip up the back-alley staircase to Lai Chuen Yuen.

Today, Singapore feels worlds away from those times – yet if you know where to look, the traces are still there. Together, we’ll walk the same streets, uncovering true stories (no fiction here) that are as colourful as they are gritty.

Meeting Point:
Chinatown MRT Station, 9am. Take Exit A, go up the escalator, and meet me between the UOB and POSB teller machines (next to the restrooms).

End Point:
China Street – once the most notorious gambling den in town, home to enough secret societies… and enough swear words to match.

If you’ve ever wanted to see the raw, unvarnished Chinatown – the one your history books never dared to mention – this is the walk for you.

THE OTHER SIDE OF CHINATOWN
Sun, 14th Sept 2025
9am to 11am

Most Chinatown tours take you to the familiar, tourist-friendly spots. Ours will show you something different – the quieter, less-polished side, where the old world still lingers.

We begin at Pagoda Street, then cross over to two of Chinatown’s most striking conserved buildings – The Majestic and The Great Southern Hotel – each with stories etched into their walls. From here, we’ll wander into areas where time seems to have slowed down. The shops, the goods on display, and even the people give you a sense of Chinatown before the makeover.

Along the way, you’ll see how the demographics and the merchandise still match each other – traditional herbal shops, household wares, and long-established businesses that have survived decades of change. You might even feel as though the uncles and aunties here have been around forever (though they’re not actually as old as they look!).

Our walk will end at Red Star Restaurant – one of the very last places in Singapore still serving dim sum from traditional pushcarts. You can choose to have lunch here for the full nostalgic experience, or head to a nearby hawker centre where the food is simple, authentic, and priced for true-blue Chinatown residents – not tourists. Either way, you’ll leave with a taste of the real Chinatown.

Meeting Point:
Chinatown MRT Station, 9am. Take Exit A, go up the escalator, and meet between the UOB and POSB teller machines (next to the restrooms).

This is Chinatown without the gloss – a glimpse into a world that’s quietly disappearing.

CRIME, VICE & MURDER WALKING TRAIL
Sun, 7th Sept 2025
9am to 1pm

Today, Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world – but not too long ago, things were very different. In the 1950s to mid-1970s, crime, vice, and murder cast long shadows over the city. Guns were tools of both justice and fear. Kidnapping, daylight robberies, and underworld dealings were almost “careers” for some.

This tour takes you back to those turbulent times, visiting the site of one of the most famous gunfights between the police and a notorious gangster – right in the heart of what was then a new, “up-and-coming” Queenstown. We’ll hear stories of the infamous Lim Ban Lim, the elusive Oh Kim Kee, and other larger-than-life figures whose exploits could rival any Hollywood script.

Oh Kim Kee, known in the underworld as a “Robin Hood”, evaded the police several times before meeting his end in a dramatic gun battle at Sims Avenue. Such was his notoriety that several brothels closed as a mark of respect. He was feared, admired, and generous – at least to those in his inner circle.

Not all cases ended so definitively. Some were solved in high drama; others faded into history, never closed. Along the way, we’ll examine crimes that shocked the nation – and some that remain mysteries. Who knows, maybe you’ll spot a clue the police missed.

Our walk will end at Flanders Square, where we revisit the unsolved 1970 killing of s*x worker Coco Ng – a crime whose perpetrator is still at large.

Meeting Point:
Meet at Queenstown MRT Station at 9am. Upon alighting, take Exit B to your left and gather at Taxi Stand F44.
End Point:
Flanders Square, around 1pm – 1.30pm.

Note:
This is a fairly long walking tour. Please bring your MRT card, as we’ll take the train from Commonwealth MRT to Farrer Park MRT.

Step into a Singapore that no longer exists – one of gangland feuds, shoot-outs, and secrets still buried in time.

NASSIM ROAD WALKING TOUR
Sat, 6th Sept 2025
9am to 11.30am

Join us for a leisurely stroll along one of Singapore’s most prestigious and expensive addresses – Nassim Road. This leafy boulevard is lined with GCBs (Good Class Bungalows), each worth millions. Even the smaller condominiums here carry a hefty price tag.

This isn’t just a walk through a neighbourhood – it’s a glimpse into a world where ambition, timing, and smart investments can turn dreams into sprawling mansions. We’ll explore how fortunes are made (and sometimes lost) in Singapore’s fast-changing real estate market, using 3xx Nassim Road as our case study.

Along the way, you’ll hear stories of how this area transformed from quiet colonial estates into an enclave for the ultra-wealthy. We’ll also look at the quirks of living here – where privacy is prized, yet fame often follows. In fact, some homes are so well-known that curious onlookers make the journey just to admire their gardens… from the street, of course.

But Nassim Road isn’t all about wealth and glamour – it’s also one of the most scenic walks in Singapore. With its towering trees, lush greenery, and the feeling of being in a private forest, this tranquil road offers a surprising escape from the bustle of Orchard Road, which is just minutes away.

We meet at 9am outside Orchard Rendezvous Hotel (formerly Orchard Parade Hotel, and before that, the Ming Court Hotel!) at 1 Tanglin Road, Singapore 247905. Our walk will end around 11.30am at the Botanic Gardens (Cluny Gate) – just in time for you to enjoy lunch nearby or continue exploring the gardens.

So, whether you want to be super rich, comfortably rich, or simply curious about how the rich live, this tour promises an intriguing and eye-opening journey. Come and see for yourself why Nassim Road is more than just a street – it’s a statement.

GEYLANG RED-LIGHT DISTRICT WALKING TOUR
Thurs, 28th Aug 2025
7pm to 10pm

Short on time but still curious? This compressed version of our popular red-light district walking tour is designed for those with tighter schedules – or anyone looking for a shorter yet impactful experience.

We’ll cover the same key route, from Lorong 12 to Lorong 18, with a more concise narration to give you time to explore independently after the tour ends. We begin at 7.00pm, and aim to finish by 9.30pm, or 10.00pm at the latest – just in time to catch the train home from Aljunied MRT or continue your evening on your own terms.

Led by your ole Uncle Chris, this tour dives into a side of Singapore that’s rarely talked about, but very much real. Yes, the topic is sensitive – but we tackle it with honesty, respect, and just the right dose of humour.

We'll explore the gritty and often misunderstood world of Geylang’s red-light scene. From the difference between cheap thrills and high-class scandals, to the unwritten codes and street-level rules, you’ll come away with a deeper understanding of how things really work – including a frank discussion on how a s*x worker might "handle" a potential client. No gimmicks, just truth.

While shorter than the full-length version, this walk is still packed with insights and real stories that many locals don’t know – let alone tourists. It’s adult content, no doubt, and not for the faint-hearted. You’ll need an open mind, and a willingness to engage with the realities behind the neon signs.

Meeting Point:
Aljunied MRT Station – Exit the gate and turn right.
We’ll gather just outside Sichuan Chef.
Date: Thursday, 28 August 2025
Time: 7.00pm sharp – ending by 9.30pm or 10.00pm

Important Notes:
– This is a mature, adult-themed tour with graphic content.
– Not suitable for children or those easily offended.
– Comfortable walking shoes and light clothing recommended.
Rain or shine, we walk – and sometimes, the rain only adds to the atmosphere.

CHINATOWN WALKING TOUR
Sun, 24th Aug 2025
9am to 12pm

Most Chinatown tours last two hours. I’m asking you for three. Why? Because Chinatown deserves more than just a quick stroll and a tidy summary.

Join me, Uncle Chris, as we dive deep into the gritty, glorious, and often surprising past of one of Singapore’s most storied neighbourhoods. This isn’t just a history lesson – it’s a journey through time, told with honesty, colour, and heart.

We’ll begin with the arrival of the early Chinese immigrants – their dreams, their despair, and the chaos they brought with them. The streets were filled with noise, struggle and confusion, until a man named William Pickering arrived to help restore order. (Yes, that’s why we have Pickering Street and Upper Pickering Street today.)

We'll talk secret societies – not just myth, but real organisations that many relied on for survival. Even the prostitutes needed protection in those rough early days. Chinatown had its dark corners, but also its golden lights.

Life began to change by the early 20th century. The Peranakans added vibrancy and celebration to daily life. Cabarets, o***m dens, and glamorous hostesses in figure-hugging cheongsams brought a sultry sparkle to Chinatown nights.

Want to know where all that action happened? We’ll point you to the Great Southern Hotel (just take the lift to the 4th floor) and the hidden staircase at Lai Chuen Yuen – if you dare.

Today, Chinatown looks polished. But look closer – the old stories still linger in its walls, alleys, and markets. On this walk, we’ll uncover the true stories – the laughter and the tears – that shaped the heart of Singapore.

Meeting Point: Chinatown MRT Station, Exit A
Take the escalator up and meet me between the UOB and POSB ATMs (next to the restrooms)
Date: Sunday, 24 August 2025
Time: 9.00am sharp – tour ends at 12.00pm

Bring comfortable walking shoes, a bottle of water, and an open mind. With your ole Uncle Chris, you’re in for a walk down memory lane – complete with the highs, the lows, and everything in between.

QUEENSTOWN HERITAGE TRAIL: FORFAR HEIGHTS, DAWSON ROAD & MARGARET DRIVE
Sat, 23rd Aug 2025
9am to 11.30am

Join us for a fascinating walk through one of Singapore’s oldest and most iconic residential estates – Queenstown.

Originally developed by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) to house a growing population, Queenstown has transformed dramatically over the decades. Today, it’s not just rich in history – it’s one of the most sought-after residential areas in Singapore. In fact, a 5-room HDB flat near Dawson Road recently sold for an astonishing $1.7 million!

On this trail, we’ll explore what makes Queenstown so desirable. We’ll begin at Margaret Drive, where towering new HDB blocks redefine public housing. These sleek skyscrapers – designed and built by HDB – offer a glimpse into the future of urban living.

There’s even talk of residents receiving generous offers when it’s time to sell. If the group agrees, we may ride the lift up to one of the top floors for a stunning bird’s-eye view of the estate.
You’ll see why many find this neighbourhood so irresistibly warm and welcoming – it almost cuddles you. From here, we’ll cross over to Ridout Road, where a different kind of charm awaits.

Unlike the modern towers of Dawson and Margaret Drive, Ridout and Pierce Roads showcase quiet elegance. Here, stately Black & White bungalows and colonial-era mansions tell the story of a different era – one of space, privacy, and understated luxury.

We’ll explore how both public and private housing in Queenstown reflect the evolution of Singapore’s housing landscape – from practical beginnings to architectural icons. Whether it’s a humble HDB flat or a grand colonial home, every corner here has a story – and a price.

Meeting Point:
Queenstown MRT Station, Exit B (left side), downstairs at Taxi Stand F44
Look out for your guide wearing a Tourist Guide badge
Date: Saturday, 23 August 2025
Time: 9.00am sharp – tour ends at around 11.30am
End Point: Junction of Holland Road and Pierce Road

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water – and get ready to experience Queenstown like never before.

GEYLANG RED-LIGHT DISTRICT WALKING TOUR
Thurs, 21st Aug 2025
7pm to 11pm

This is the mother of all red-light district walking tours in Singapore – bold, unfiltered, and fully updated. Join Uncle Chris for an eye-opening evening walk through the heart of Geylang, where history, scandal, and street life meet in ways few dare to talk about.

We start at 7.00pm sharp and wrap up by 11.00pm, giving you just enough time to catch the train home from Aljunied MRT. This is a no-holds-barred, adults-only experience – informative, unflinching, and yes, at times, provocative.

From Lorong 12 to Lorong 24A, we’ll explore Singapore’s most infamous district – a place often misunderstood and rarely discussed. We’ll dive deep into the gritty realities and the glamourous myths: the difference between cheap thrills and high-society scandals, the codes of the trade, and the unsaid rules of engagement.

No sugar-coating here. Uncle Chris tells it like it is – with honesty, humour, and respect for the real lives and stories behind the neon lights. Whether you’re curious about the social history, the hidden laws of the streets, or just want to understand a side of Singapore most shy away from, this walk is for you.

It’s also a surprisingly educational experience – especially for younger locals who’ve only heard whispers about Geylang’s past. Parents may find it hard to talk about this topic; this tour does it for you – openly, maturely, and insightfully.
