You can work a popper across the same stretch of water for an hour and get nothing. Then the surface erupts behind it, the rod loads and the drag starts pouring line while the fish turns for the reef.

From there it’s you, the crew and whatever the leader can take.

The first thing to understand is that fish aren’t spread evenly through the ocean. They gather where moving water pushes food into a narrow space, and everything else follows from that.

Which is why the tide matters as much as the spot. The same stretch of water can give you nothing at slack and turn on completely once it starts moving.

You don’t need to know any of this to come out with us. Our guides read it for you. But it’s the kind of thing that makes the day make sense once you understand what everyone’s looking at.
