Many people have been travelling to Northern Xinjiang recently.
But what exactly makes it so special?
Northern Xinjiang is not just about snow-capped mountains, vast grasslands, and beautiful lakes.
What makes it truly unique is the feeling that you are stepping into a completely different world.
Here, you will see a blend of different ethnic cultures living together.
You may come across Uyghur, Kazakh, Hui, and Mongolian communities, as well as people with Russian or Central Asian features.
This is because Xinjiang was once a key part of the ancient Silk Road.
For centuries, different ethnic groups, traders, and cultures have passed through and interacted here, which is why the streets, food, and atmosphere in Northern Xinjiang feel so diverse and culturally rich.
Many people also ask:
“Is Xinjiang only about beef and lamb?”
There is no need to worry.
Although Xinjiang is well known for its beef and lamb dishes, the meat here is very fresh, so it is often described as tender and without the strong gamey taste people might expect.
One of the most famous local dishes is Big Plate Chicken.
Tender chicken is stewed with potatoes, green peppers, and rich spices in a flavourful sauce. It is hearty, aromatic, and usually served with Northern Xinjiang-style hand-pulled noodles.
These handmade noodles include dishes like laghman and mixed noodles. The noodles are freshly pulled, with a chewy and springy texture. They are stir-fried with meat such as beef or chicken, together with tomatoes, onions, and green peppers. Simple, but incredibly flavourful and satisfying.
Besides this, seafood options can also be found in certain areas and restaurants.
Fresh and juicy fish, prawns, and other seafood dishes are available, so travellers who do not eat beef or lamb can still enjoy a wide variety of food in Xinjiang.
And of course, when visiting, don’t miss the local specialties such as grilled skewers, hand pilaf (rice dishes), and baked buns — all very popular and iconic local flavours.
Xinjiang is also famous for its fruits.
Sweet and crunchy Hami melons, juicy grapes, and many other fruits are extremely popular among visitors, thanks to the long hours of sunshine and big temperature differences between day and night, which make them especially sweet and refreshing.
But the biggest highlight of Northern Xinjiang is still its scenery.
You will see places like Kanas Lake, the wooden villages of Hemu, the deep blue Sayram Lake, the vast Nalati Grassland, along with endless snow mountains, forests, and scenic road journeys.
Northern Xinjiang is not just a destination for quick photo stops.
It is a journey meant to be slowly experienced — with scenery, food, culture, and a touch of Central Asian atmosphere.
So if you are looking for a different kind of travel experience in China,
Northern Xinjiang is definitely worth adding to your list.
