We had a lovely day out exploring 4 of Singapores specialty design stores. We started in Tanjong Pagar. A brief intro to the day ahead with some interesting facts shared with us by our guide Charlottle.

We wandered up the street to our first Designer – Eden & Elie. A beautiful store with all handmade jewellery, responsibly sourced and purposefully made. The business has been operating since 2017 and they have many designers with ASD to create their stunning pieces, each meticulously hand made. Along with the pieces being very unique, it gives these adults a sense of purpose & career which they absolutely cherish and apply incredible attention to detail.

A short walk away was our second stop – Binary Style. Another beautiful store with magnificent Singaporean silk scarves, kaftans, cotton robes, homewares and more. Singapore culture was the flavour here!

We then took a local bus to our next stop in Bras Basah Complex - When I was Four. This is a quirky little store with so many kitschy gifts and trinkets. The store has a very strong following from locals. A family owned and run business, certainly has an eclectic array of items. A Singaporean design studio that turns everyday moments into creative lifestyle products with a local twist.

To round out the tour, we headed off on another local bus to Little India. Our stop here was called ‘äNerd’. This was an interesting store, owned by Tony, an Indonesian who is passionate about his homelands Batik culture. We were shown how the batik process is done, the intricacy of the waxing and dyeing. We learnt that true batik is made and sold by the piece, rather than by the metre, as many printed batik fabrics are sold. His genuine interest to educate us in true Batik was wonderful to hear.

Definitely wonderful places to visit if you are looking for a uniquely Singaporean gifts by local designers!

Regardless of the very wet weather on Saturday the group had a fantastic tour finding out all about HDBs and the North of Singapore!!

Tour guide, Chaqa, was very enthusiastic and informative, he had all the facts and figures and gave us a deep dive into how the HDB system works which was insightful .

We visited the Yushin market thereafter which is very local and full of every type of Asian food… Yum!

People were very happy to see us and many told us we were welcome to Singapore… 🫶

Onto the local cemetery and then we popped into Chaqa’s HDB home to see for ourselves what living in one is like. The final part of the tour was a drive through the original British Army black and white quarters ( which is now used by the US military apparently).

We ended with a drive by some jaw dropping beautiful black and white houses before we all said goodbye. Thank you everyone for braving the weather and turning the day into a truly memorable one!

Mother’s Day High Tea at Atlas Bar!

12 lovely ladies gathered over 2 tables of 6 to enjoy a simply wonderful high tea.
An opportunity for the ladies to frock up & revel in the art deco glamour of Atlas bar.

We started with an amuse bouche- a taste sensation of a warm mushroom ragout in a small ramekin, with mashed potato & topped with rice crisps. It was delicious! We were also all treated to a lovely glass of the house gin & champagne cocktail to get us all in the mood.

We then enjoyed an array of savoury finger sandwiches, sausage roll, & shrimp briochette.

This was followed up with the sweet treats. A delectable assortment of tartlets, cakes, scones with jam & cream and more.

To accompany the food, many of us enjoyed some beautiful pots of tea. The Muscat white tea was a firm favourite. Later, others enjoyed coffees & hot chocolates whilst one table raised the bar with French champagne which elevated the conversations and laughter.

The decor & history of the venue was relayed to us by our attentive server Ryder.

Many new friends made, great conversations and much fun was had in an absolutely stunning setting.

In Singapore, 80% of the population live in public housing. The estates are designed for self-sufficiency, with amenities so well planned that residents rarely need to leave their neighbourhood for daily essentials. On this tour, we’ll visit two areas to see how locals live, shop and eat.

Our first stop is Queenstown, the oldest HDB development in the Lion City, though you’d never guess it from the sleek new blocks around you. We’ll explore two of the most sought-after new developments, both located next to a park and recognised with numerous architecture awards locally and internationally.
After taking the MRT to Redhill, we’ll stop for drinks at a hawker centre and visit an award-winning building housing various voluntary welfare organisations. There’s also some lovely cafes and shops run by local charities to check out.

Exertion: There will be a lot of walking; please wear comfortable footwear, bring an umbrella and a bottle of water

Date: Friday 12 June

Time: 9:30am to 12:30pm

Meeting Point: Queenstown MRT, Exit B

Cost: ANZA Members - $60, Non - Members $70

On our day trip to Johor Bahru we visited Forest City.

Forest City a huge development that can house approximately 700k people but currently has just 1% occupancy. It’s known as one of the many ghost towns across south east Asia.
These types of developments, that haven’t gone as planned, is usually due to economic, political and planning factors that don’t line up with real demand.
It was absolutely fascinating to look around the very large showroom as well as seeing the huge grounds and to walk through an apartment. It’s hard to describe what it was like to see it all. The vision itself is magical, then seeing it not come together and be so eerily quiet was very unique indeed.
Such an interesting place to learn about during our visit.

A wonderful tour with the community!!
