Reposted from Experience a stunning collaboration between nature, contemporary art, and ancient history at historic Hattasan Soneiji Temple.

Hattasan Soneiji was founded 1,300 years ago to enshrine an image of Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. The serene temple grounds continue to attract pilgrims who seek Kannon’s divine protection and some time well spent among nature.

The vibrant blue, pink, and purple hydrangea blooms on Hattasan Soneiji are perennial favorites, made even more popular with the pastel blue, pink, and purple umbrellas that line Hydrangea Park. In the middle of the park, carefully arranged clusters of umbrellas form larger-than-life hydrangeas.

Not far from Hydrangea Park is the Umbrella Sky, a whimsical installation of umbrellas suspended in midair. It is especially beautiful on clear, sunny days when the umbrellas’ colorful shadows are cast onto the pavement.

As a bonus, hydrangea season coincides with the start of the Enshu Sanzan Wind Bell Festival that we introduced in our previous post. This means you can enjoy beautiful blooms, art installations, and wind bells all in one trip! It’s the perfect way to take in Japan’s history, nature, and art while snapping some amazing photos.

▷ Relax with the fresh springtime tea aroma in Suruga ◁

Green tea can be enjoyed all year round, but in April every year, why does it become the main character of the “seasonal special” in Japan?
Only those who really love tea know the answer.

As the spring warms up, the new buds in the tea farms appear in the ground.
The “Ichiban Tea” plucked at this time is the first and tenderest gift of the tea plant after accumulating nutrients throughout the winter.
With its fresh aroma and sweet flavor, it is known as the “tea of life in spring”.

Every year in mid-April, the , where the Shizuoka Tea Market is located, holds the annual opening of the new tea market.
As tea lovers know, this is the moment when the freshest aromas of the year make their official debut.

During the new tea season from April to May, farmers are busy picking and making tea while welcoming the new green scenery of the tea fields.
Standing in a tea field in Suruga, you can experience a vast expanse of fresh green in front of your eyes, and in the distance, Mt. Fuji brightens the scenery.
A tea field with Mt. Fuji in the background creates the most beautiful scene of spring in Suruga, one that touches the hearts tea lovers.

Satta Pass (薩埵峠), located in Shizuoka Prefecture, offers one of Japan’s classic views — overlooking Suruga Bay with Mount Fuji rising in the distance. Once traveled by foot along the historic Tōkaidō Road, today the scene blends tradition and modernity, with highways and railway lines tracing the coastline — a living landscape famously captured by Hiroshige in his ukiyo-e art.
