Reposted from Experience a stunning collaboration between nature, contemporary art, and ancient history at historic Hattasan Soneiji Temple.
Hattasan Soneiji was founded 1,300 years ago to enshrine an image of Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. The serene temple grounds continue to attract pilgrims who seek Kannon’s divine protection and some time well spent among nature.
The vibrant blue, pink, and purple hydrangea blooms on Hattasan Soneiji are perennial favorites, made even more popular with the pastel blue, pink, and purple umbrellas that line Hydrangea Park. In the middle of the park, carefully arranged clusters of umbrellas form larger-than-life hydrangeas.
Not far from Hydrangea Park is the Umbrella Sky, a whimsical installation of umbrellas suspended in midair. It is especially beautiful on clear, sunny days when the umbrellas’ colorful shadows are cast onto the pavement.
As a bonus, hydrangea season coincides with the start of the Enshu Sanzan Wind Bell Festival that we introduced in our previous post. This means you can enjoy beautiful blooms, art installations, and wind bells all in one trip! It’s the perfect way to take in Japan’s history, nature, and art while snapping some amazing photos.
