Last Friday, we celebrated outstanding achievements in landscape architecture at the 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 — an especially meaningful event as it also marked the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗔)’s 40th anniversary.

We are proud to share that 𝗦𝗧𝗫 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 (𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗶𝗻𝗰) was honoured with a 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆 for our project My First Skool at 3 Pasir Ris Drive 6 (MFS Loyang).

𝗠𝗙𝗦 𝗟𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴 is one of My First Skool’s few large standalone childcare centres, and it was a privilege for us to serve as the Landscape Architect for this unique project. The design expresses landscape forms that are both beautiful and purposeful — where imagination, function, and child-centred outdoor experiences come together. Much like the Impressionist artist Camille Corot, who often took artistic license by interweaving elements from different physical locations to achieve a desired emotional or aesthetic effect, we too sought to craft vibrant, imaginative outdoor spaces — drawing inspiration from the diverse geological forms found across Singapore, and translating them into landscape experiences that feel immersive and deeply connected to place.

I still recall our first meeting with Laud Architects. 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗵-𝗬𝗲𝗼, 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗧𝗫 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 https://www.linkedin.com/in/helen-smith-yeo-52a44929/, brought along her hand-made study model featuring a drop-off canopy that doubled as an elevated walkway looping gracefully around the existing Yellow Flame trees. 𝗘𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝘄, 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 https://www.linkedin.com/company/laud-architects-pte-ltd/about/, big-hearted and open-minded, looked at it and said, “𝘕𝘰𝘸, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦-𝘢𝘥𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘢 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵.”

At one point of the project, the Client requested the removal of several landscape elements in favour of more open, flat areas for play. We held our ground — not by rejecting the concern, but by demonstrating, through 3D modelling, how our designed spaces could comfortably support groups of children, aligned with typical class sizes and teaching objectives. The result: a richer, more functional landscape that remained true to the original design intent. 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗧𝗮𝗻, 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗙𝗦 𝗟𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 — a heartwarming testament to how well-loved and engaging the outdoor environment has become for the young users it was designed for.

During the jury panel's site visit, one of the judges remarked that this was “𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀.”

We are pleased to announce that our project, Yunnan Garden Rejuvenation, has been shortlisted for the WAF Landscape category at the World Architectural Festival 2022.

Yunnan Garden began as a competition in 2016 for STX Landscape Architects, and we were the lead consultant and designer for the completed project. From the beginning, the Yunnan Garden project presented STX Landscape Architects with many important issues that covered an extensive and varied gamut of domains: culture, history, heritage, old trees to be saved, environment and not least, education. The design highlights and brings to the surface these elements so that the resultant project is well rooted in its context and in its time.

Ms. Helen Smith-Yeo was honoured to be one of the 26 invited speakers at the International Federation of Landscape Architects World Congress held on 18-22 August 2021. Here is recording of her presentation on topic of “Saving the Blue and the Green: The Basis of Life”.

With specific reference to countering human impact on biodiversity and the Earth, Helen shows project examples where STX has over the years been the agents for sustainability, in the successful saving of Trees, Water and Materials as Finite Resources, for the betterment of the Earth.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As the year of 2020 draws to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to send you greetings and also to inform you that STX Landscape Architects will be closed for this festive season for 2 weeks - from Friday 18th December 2020 12noon until 4th January 2021 inclusive.

This Covid year has not been an easy time for everyone all around the globe, both mentally and physically, and as such, exceptionally for this year we will have a 2 week office closure to allow ourselves a longer length of time from the office - for a quiet reflective break and meaningful engagement with family and those friends grounded in Singapore with us.

We look forward to a new 2021 and the passage towards better and healthier times🍹.
