You never really think about our lighthouses and their functions ๐Ÿšจ Three out of the five current Singapore lighthouses were built in the 1800s, so they have been crucial to our port operations from the time of Raffles till now! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I'm so glad the MPA has launched new tours to the Sultan Shoal Lighthouse, which allow more people to understand just how dynamic our maritime industry is ๐Ÿ’ฏ

On this trip, we not only get to see the lighthouse - on the 1hr boat ride there, we also get an education on port operations (container shipping, bunkering activities, transhipment, etc) and an idea of just how game-changing the new Tuas Megaport will be! ๐Ÿฆพ At present, Singapore might be the top bunkering (marine fueling) hub and transhipment port in the world (handling 44million containers last year ๐Ÿคฏ), but we are going full steam ahead to future-proof the port as we did with containerisation in the 1960s๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Passing Jurong Island on the way, I'm also surprised at how massive this petrochemical hub is, made from amalgamating 7 offshore islands ๐Ÿ๏ธ Our guides from Lion Heartlanders did an excellent job of not just telling us about the hardware but also the heart-ware of the maritime industry and its workers - for our port never sleeps (not even during COVID)! โค๏ธ The tour of the lighthouse is actually a gateway to learning more about our fascinating maritime industry (of course the lighthouse itself is gorgeous! ๐Ÿ˜) I heard some dates are already full, so quickly sign up for the tour at this link below. Thanks for the invitation MPA! https://www.eventbrite.sg/o/maritime-and-port-authority-of-singapore-33118319721

Someone just reminded me that today is the 6th of June and I remember my dad saying in an interview that he joined the SAF as a regular in 6.6.66! ๐Ÿช– So today marks the 60th anniversary of his career in the defence and security of Singapore - one that spans more than 50 years! ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ I don't think he would have ever imagined that this 'job' would bring such rich life-changing experiences - from land to sea, and overseas training and missions ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป He's an insider to how our defence forces developed right from the beginning of Singapore's independence ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

I selected some pages from his book the SAFTI Runabout - People, Places & Events, to commemorate the occasion ๐Ÿ˜„ After all, SAFTI is where it all started! ๐Ÿ’ฏ Get in touch if you would like to purchase a copy! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks to the tour I attended by on New Harbour and the surrounding area, I can now better appreciate this vintage calendar! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป The picture shows the view from the top of Mount Faber towards the greenery of Sentosa, with the wharves of Keppel Harbour in the foreground (present day Harbourfront area) ๐Ÿ—๏ธ There's even what looks like a ship parked in the dry dock โ›ด๏ธ This item was made for the Japanese market, as evident from the calendar, and inadvertently captures a landscape that has completely changed today and is still changing ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Ironically the calendar itself can be used indefinitely as it's perpetual! ๐Ÿ˜„ For sale at the shop now.

Your eyes are not playing tricks on you ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Yes that Record clamp is really huge, and so is that brass nautical steering wheel ๐Ÿ˜„ Both sold and collected today, thanks to the customer who like my dad, was/is a diver and also loves hardware! ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ I've been saying for years that I should make a record of the tools and nautical items we have. Well that list is still a WIP, haha. Meanwhile, get in touch if you're looking for any vintage tools or maritime items! ๐Ÿ”ง๐Ÿฆพ

Had a lovely visit yesterday from Dennis, a former neighbour from Normanton Park where our shop was located 8 years ago! ๐ŸŒฟ He lives in the UK now and I'm so happy he had time to drop by on this visit, and pick up the vintage BOAC jug he was eyeing in our shop. I think it was waiting for him all this time, haha ๐Ÿคญโœˆ๏ธ We shared fond memories of eating at the condo canteen run by Steven (Steven if you see this, we would love to know if you are still cooking elsewhere ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿณ) and how we all loved living at Normanton โ™ฅ๏ธ Thanks for dropping by Dennis, and see you again! ๐Ÿ˜Š

So I went on a house pick yesterday after a long time ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป For me, the thrill is never about finding 'treasure' as in gold or silver ๐Ÿช™ It's finding local memories, or ways of living in the past that have totally gone or been replaced. Was especially thrilled to see the plastic mats of my childhood ๐Ÿ˜„ I remember having to lay these out in primary school whenever we sat on the floor for an activity! ๐ŸŽ’ One of them even has a company name woven into the design. Also love the plastic marketing basket ๐Ÿงบ My eyes also lit up when I saw that simple rattan steamer tray which I've not come across before - so well made it survived more than 50 years of use โ™จ๏ธThey're all a time capsule of Singapore life in the past ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ I'm still sorting - some items will be for sale, some are for rental ๐Ÿ˜„ Stay tuned to see what else I uncover! Happy holidays everyone ๐ŸŽ‰

The very first Buddha teaching I learnt at the Buddhist classes I attended a very long time ago was this ๐Ÿชท
To avoid doing evil
To do good
To purify one's mind
That is the teaching of the Buddha๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ
I believe all religions teach a similar philosophy ๐Ÿ’ฏ It might sound simple but it's not as easy as it seems. Let's try anyway! ๐Ÿ˜„ Wishing all Buddhists a peaceful and happy Vesak Day! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Twakows on the Singapore River - as ubiquitous and numerous as cars on the road ๐Ÿšฃ๐Ÿป But that was more than 50 years ago. Today only six survive in Singapore, down from a high of 3,000 in the 1950s! ๐Ÿ“‰ The humble wooden twakow (teochew for bumboat) is also featured on our $5 ship series note ๐Ÿ’ต

Don't miss this rare chance to view an almost 60-year-old working twakow at an event organised by the Singapore Maritime Heritage Interest Group! ๐Ÿ˜„ Heritage researcher Lee Kok Leong will also give a talk on this humble workhorse of our maritime nation, and tell stories of migrant resilience and traditional shipbuilding craftsmanship (the twakows were made in Singapore ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ!)

The twakows (like the coolies) were crucial to Singapore's trade and prosperity as they bridged the last mile of logistics, ferrying goods from larger sea-going vessels anchored out in the harbour to the godowns along the river ๐Ÿ“ฆ

Talk details:
The Singapore $5 Workhorse: A Twakow's Untold Story in an Island Nation
Date: 6 June 2026, Sat
Time: 12pm
Venue: Singapore Maritime Gallery , 31 Marina Coastal Drive

Many hands but no help at all ๐Ÿ˜‚ Interestingly these vintage 'hands' are all made of different materials ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿป The standing one is porcelain and I believe a glove mould, the one I'm holding is a pretty realistic mannequin hand, and the flesh coloured hand is the heaviest as it's made of metal ๐Ÿฆพ All great for a jewellery display! ๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ“ฟ
