Here's what you missed yesterday at the Military Hobby Fest at SAFRA Toa Payoh! 🪖 My dad's talk of course, and a close community gathering to celebrate their passion for the military through modelling, painting, weaponry, RC vehicles, uniforms and more! ♥️ We met friends from the Defence Collective and SAF Veterans League, and there was even a group of young enthusiasts from Kuala Lumpur who came dressed up in British and Japanese army gear 🇬🇧 We also listened in on the other interesting talks 👍 Huge thanks to everyone who came down specially to hear my dad talk about his SAF bomb disposal mission in Bangladesh in 1978 and to the organisers who invited him to speak. Congrats on another successful event! 👏

This was one of SAF's earliest overseas missions from a government to government request. Might be the first!

My dad is featured in today's paper! 📰 Ahead of his talk later at SAFRA Toa Payoh, here's some background 😄 He always jokes that the only place he didn't serve is the Air Force, having been in the army, navy, SCDF, CID and Home Team 🪖👮🏻 Jokes aside, I encourage my dad to share his experiences so we will know not to take our defence for granted! Did you know in the early days of the NDU, the divers used a confiscated cargo vessel abandoned by Vietnamese refugees? ⚓ Some pioneer regulars like him went for training overseas, learning from more developed countries such as the UK 🇬🇧 to transfer the knowledge back to local units. Our military capabilities were built up slowly over time into the formidable force it is now💪🏻

81 years ago today on 12 Sept 1945, the Japanese General Seishiro Itagaki signed the formal surrender document at City Hall (now the National Gallery), with British Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten accepting the surrender 🇬🇧 The grand ceremony marked the end of 3 years, 6 months and 29 days of Japanese occupation, a dark and traumatic period in Singapore's history 🇸🇬 Next to the copy of the surrender document is a new book that launched today! 📚 Syonan - 80 Objects from Occupied Singapore captures the stories of items belonging to everyday people in Singapore during the Occupation.They provide a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people during this challenging time. Thanks to collectors and authors Benjamin Seet and Dominic Tan for bringing us this insightful tome - congrats! 👏

This amazing mouth blown blue-green glass fishing float was hiding in that cabinet we just sold 😄 What's amazing about it is its size meaning the person who made it must had had great lungs! 🫁 Plus the netting is also handwoven from natural fibres such as h**p or jute as there were no synthetic fibres before the 1950s. It still managed to survive the harsh sea and weather conditions! 👍 For sale, see this and more rare nautical artefacts at our shop! ⚓

In a crowded shop, selling something as big as this vintage 180cm tall teak cabinet tucked away in a corner means lots of planning and moving of a million small things around it 😂💪🏻 But it also means a new space opens up for display! ♥️ And uncovering of items that I forgot were in the shop, haha. Let me take a minute to admire the blank space before I fill it up again 😍😝 See you at the shop!

My dad rarely talks about his work in the army 🪖 He was the commander of the small but specialised Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) of the SAF 36 Singapore Combat Engineers (SCE) 💣 In the 1970s, they were kept busy with the disposal of unexploded WWII shells found on HDB construction sites 🏗️ But in 1978, the SAF received an urgent request for help from the government of Bangladesh 🇧🇩 They had discovered a large unexploded war relic near an important factory! 🏭

Next Sunday 13 Sept, listen to a firsthand account of my dad's experience leading a small team to Bangladesh to make safe and remove the 272kg aerial bomb in what was a challenging and risky operation 😮 It's the first time he's speaking on this topic so come by the Military Hobby Fest to learn about one of SAF's earliest overseas missions! 🫡
