Our props are back from the viral Kopi Shop at Marina Square! ☕Did you manage to get your hands on those coveted SG60 plushies? 🍞🐣🥚Thanks Play Nation for working with us to bring your kopitiam vision to life! 😄 And for bringing me my very own Kaya Toast plushie - yes the very one that was so popular it had to be restocked! 🔥 The pop-up has ended but you can still get these cuties from the Playnation website! Now I wonder what they're cooking up for SG61 🇸🇬 😄 Contact us if you're looking for any vintage props for your event!

It's amazing how a humble switch can evoke so many lovely memories 🥰 I lost track of the number of people who came up to us at the pop-up at last week to say they remember the familiar click-clack of these switches!💡😄 The switches are still perfectly functional today, or use them as nostalgic wall decor. They were never used without a wooden backing as safety insulation 👍🏻 See more vintage electrical fixtures at our shop including fan regulators, sockets, and more! Make an appointment to visit 😄

Thank you MU/SE Magazine for helping to tell the stories behind the artefacts we collect! 💪🏻 For their special SG60 feature, we selected the humble coolie hook that really is symbolic of the hard work of our pioneers from the early days of independence to the prosperous nation we are today 🇸🇬

To be featured alongside the other 59 well-known local personalities is humbling and an honour too! 🙏🏻 It's great encouragement for us to continue telling the stories of the past which might otherwise be forgotten 🤗 We love the work you're doing MU/SE! ❤️

SG60 SPECIAL

——————
60 FOR 60
——————

为庆祝新加坡建国一甲子,《MU/SE》 特邀60位来自不同领域的精彩人物,各自呈献创意作品或独特收藏,作为致敬狮城60岁生日的献礼。

黄锦基
Winston Wong

You might know that my dad was an army officer but did you know he was a combat engineer in the Bomb Disposal Unit? His knowledge of EOD (explosives ordnance disposal) was the reason why he trained to be a naval diver and started the Naval Diving Unit in the early 1970s.

Thanks to Dr Loh Kah Seng for allowing my dad to share his lived-experience on Chronicles of Old Singapore ! Here's part one where dad talks about joining the army in 1966, tough training under the Israelis, and defusing bombs around Singapore. Enjoy the stories!

Welcome to Chronicles of Old Singapore. Winston Wong recalls being in the 2nd batch of officer cadets at SAFTI and how the Israeli ‘advisors’ who trained the...

Changi Experience Studio: "We want to recreate a travel agency of the 1980s for an exhibition. Do you have a suitable phone?"
Me: "Of course!" 😄

It's just one phone but we take pride in the fact that we had exactly what they wanted for the exhibition! 💯 It helps that we have a huge library of vintage items for sale and rent! What props are you looking for? Let us know! 😊

What better way to commemorate National Day than getting to know our country better? 😄 Led by Tuah Bugis (real name Sarafian), our heritage trail this morning covered more than 700 years of Singapore history even before Sang Nila Utama stepped foot here 🦁

From Fort Canning to Cavenagh Bridge, it was an utterly enjoyable way to unpack the rich history of our island state all the way up to its 60th birthday today 🎉 🇸🇬 We learnt the origins of the Merlion and sat in a chamber that witnessed many of our nation's milestones (guess where?) You've come a long way Singapore! 🔴 Onward we go! 😄

Our Story

By My Old School started because of our love for collecting vintage items. The shop opened in Normanton Park in 2011, but the collection really began a long time ago with the dad of the family (Winston), which has since influenced his daughter (me!) to collect as well. We’ve now moved to larger premises at 115A Commonwealth Drive (a heritage building), and we're already running out of space with our vintage and retro curios, homeware, luggage, kitchenware, typewriters, gadgets, nautical items, lamps, and much much more. We sell and rent props, plus provide consultancy services, so drop us a line or call us to make an appointment to visit! Nearest MRT to our shop: Commonwealth MRT Exit B/C Buses: 32, 100, 105, 111, 122, 145, 147, 195, 196, 198, 970 The Mapletree Industrial Building we’re in is behind One Commonwealth and opposite the MOE Heritage Centre. Opening Hours: We open by appointment, call me (Rebecca) at 9879 2088, drop me a FB message or email at [email protected]. Payment: Payment by cash, or Paynow and PayLah =) Parking: There's affordable parking at the building.
