On the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka prefecture, there is a volcano which you can simply ride up, stroll around the rim, and take in one of the most surprisingly spectacular views in all of eastern Japan.

The grass-covered Mt Omuro is a perfectly conical dormant volcano with a distinctive bowl-shaped silhouette that stands out magnificently against the blue sky. At a height of 580m, it is designated as both a national natural monument and a UNESCO World Geopark.

A chair lift whisks you to the summit in just 6 minutes, where the real reward awaits. A full 360-degree panorama taking in Mt Fuji, the Southern Alps, the Izu Islands, and the deep blue sweep of Sagami Bay stretching to the horizon can be seen from the top along the Crater Walk, a gentle 1km loop around the rim of the volcano.

The crater itself plunges 70m deep, with an archery range sitting where the ancient eruption site once was, adding a wonderfully unexpected touch that is very much part of Mt Omuro's charm.

Accessible, family-friendly, and full of surprises, Mt Omuro is a stop not to be missed on a visit to the Izu Peninsula. Come with us to see Mt Omuro and more amazing sights around Mt Fuji on a drive tour this December!

When most people think of autumn in Japan, they picture maple trees ablaze in red and gold. But at the Higashiyoka Coast Shichimento Field in Saga prefecture, autumn puts on a completely different kind of show, unfolding not in the mountains, but right at the edge of the sea.

Shichimenso are saltwater plants that thrive in the ebbing tides of the Ariake Sea, and every autumn, the vast colony growing along the Higashiyoka Coast turns a brilliant red and purple, earning them the wonderful nickname "autumn leaves of the sea."

Stretching across the tidal flats as far as the eye can see, these 20 to 40cm tall plants are a rare halophyte found only in parts of the Ariake Sea, making this one of the most unusual and quietly spectacular seasonal displays in all of Japan.

The observation deck at the visitor centre offers the finest panoramic view of the entire shichimenso colony – a sea of vivid red spreading across the foreground, with the broad expanse of the Ariake Sea and the silhouettes of distant mountain ranges beyond.

Strolling along the boardwalk by the embankment, you can also get up close with the plants and appreciate the sheer density and colour of the display. The tidal flats are also home to mudskippers, fiddler crabs, and a healthy population of migratory shorebirds, giving you a chance to do some wildlife spotting too!

See a different kind of autumn scenery at Higashiyoka Coast when you come with us to Saga this October!

Deep in the Tohoku region, in the quiet historic town of Hiraizumi in Iwate prefecture, stands one of Japan's most extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Constructed by Fujiwara no Kiyohira to memorialise the fallen after a decades-long war, Chusonji has stood in one form or another since 850 AD, making it one of the oldest temples in the country.

The 740m long Tsukimizaka slope lined with towering 300-year-old cedar trees leads you gradually upward toward the main hall. At the heart of the complex awaits the main hall and the crown jewel of Chusonji, the Konjikido, or Golden Hall.

Built in 1124 and designated a national treasure, Konjikido is one of the few original buildings which survived Chusonji’s tumultuous lifetime. Its interior and exterior are entirely covered in gold leaf, with the inner sanctum decorated with lacquer, mother-of-pearl and elaborate design, a breathtaking testament to the wealth and artistry of the Fujiwara clan at the height of their power.

The appeal of Chusonji is at its peak in autumn when the vivid reds and oranges of lush autumn foliage engulfs the grounds in a canopy of colour. Surrounded by blazing foliage and wrapped in centuries of history, it is one of the most quietly reverent yet stunningly beautiful places you can visit.

Come with us to Chusonji this autumn and discover a place where history and nature come together in a way that is unmistakably Japanese.

There are travel experiences, and then there are experiences that redefine what travel can be. guntû is one of these.

Conceived as a floating luxury ryokan, guntû is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary hospitality experiences in Japan, and it is not difficult to understand why. Stepping aboard feels like entering another realm entirely – a serene, light-filled world of warm wood and Zen-inspired calm, where the Seto Inland Sea is always present and the pace of the world outside simply ceases to matter.

Designed by architect Yasushi Horibe, the ship is built for quiet luxury. Warm cedar surfaces, considered spaces, and just 17 suites, each feeling expansive and serene. Every suite features large windows framing uninterrupted views of the sea, while select cabins offer private baths overlooking the water.

The connection between interior and ocean is seamless and constant. Wherever you are on board, the sea is always with you, weaving into every experience on board. From the open decks to large cypress bath, to the intimate sushi bar and main dining room.

Cuisine is supervised by celebrated chef Shigeyoshi Sato, with every dish drawing on the finest produce of the Seto Inland Sea. Seafood of remarkable freshness is delivered fresh to the ship, along with seasonal ingredients at their peak. With a concept of ‘enjoy what you want, as much as you want’, there is no limit to your gastronomic enjoyment onboard.

The journey unfolds along the Seto Inland Sea, one of Japan's most serene and storied waterways, its calm, glassy surface dotted with pine-covered islands, ancient fishing harbours and timeless coastal scenery that drifts past like a living painting.

This October, we have chartered guntû exclusively for our guests. The entire ship, for FMJ alone, sailing a curated itinerary through the heart of the Inland Sea. An arrangement that turns a remarkable experience into a genuinely once-in-a-lifetime one, find out more about our tour and reserve your suite from the link below.

There are corners of Japan that the crowds have yet to find. Places of wild, unhurried beauty that feel like a discovery all your own. Ikitsuki Island in northwestern Nagasaki is exactly that kind of place, and its coastline is one of the most dramatically beautiful in all of Kyushu.

The star scenery here is the Shiodawara Cliffs, a rare and remarkable example of columnar jointing, where hexagonal basalt columns stack together in towering formations along 500m of rugged coastline, rising up to 20m above the crashing sea.

The name "Shiodawara" means "salt bag" in Japanese, a nod to how the columns resemble the traditional straw bags once used to pack salt. Shaped by millions of years of volcanic activity and relentless ocean waves, the overall effect is of something ancient and extraordinary, a scene worthy of being chosen as one of Nagasaki 's 100 Tourist Spots.

The cliffs are just the beginning. The Ikitsuki Sunset Way on the western edge of the island is a stunning 10km coastal drive tracing the clifftops above the East China Sea. As its name promises, it delivers one of the most beautiful sunsets you'll ever witness. With a golden-orange glow which spreads across the road and sea as the sun dips below the horizon, it’s no surprise that this scenic road is a top filming spot for commercials.

Raw coastline, ancient geology, and a sunset that stops the clock, Ikitsuki Island is one of those places that rewards those who venture off the beaten path. Take in these marvellous sceneries and more when you come with us on an tour to Kyushu this autumn.

Hokkaido is home to the magnificent Ezo brown bear, one of Japan's most iconic and awe-inspiring wild animals. And at Sahoro Bear Mountain, you get to encounter them up close in a way that is truly unlike anything else.

Set in the lush Karikachi Plateau, Sahoro Bear Mountain is a sprawling bear reserve where Ezo brown bears roam freely across 15 hectares of natural forest, and the experience has been thoughtfully designed to bring you as close as possible while keeping both visitors and bears completely at ease.

A 5m high elevated walkway stretches 370m through the forest canopy, letting you look down upon the bears as they wander freely among the trees, play, and splash in the pond below. Watching a bear go about its day, unhurried, unbothered, and entirely in its element, from just metres away is an experience hard to come by and even harder to forget.

You can venture even deeper into the forest on the Bear Watching Bus which takes you through the heart of the reserve for an even more immersive journey through the bears' territory. And at the centre of the park, Bear Point's glass-enclosed observation area brings you face to face with the bears at remarkably close range, allowing you to appreciate just how powerful and magnificent these animals really are.

Sahoro Bear Mountain is one of those places where you can truly experience the wild and endlessly fascinating side of Hokkaido. Join us in some bear-watching here when we visit on a tour this summer!

Hakuba in Nagano prefecture is famous for its dramatic Japanese Alps scenery, and tucked quietly at the edge of the village is a spot that many consider its most picturesque.

Oide Park is one of Hakuba Village's most iconic locations, where a suspension bridge over the Himekawa River and traditional thatched farmhouses sit together against the magnificent backdrop of the Northern Alps – a scene so perfectly composed it looks almost painted.

Stunning in every season, the river is flanked by cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and in autumn, its most colourful season, the park transforms into a canvas of vibrant red and orange foliage. On a clear day, the snow-dusted peaks of the Alps rise above the treeline in striking contrast against the autumn foliage, creating a view to stop you in your tracks and reach for your camera.

If you’re lucky enough to catch the sweet spot for the autumn colours, you can even witness a multi-layered spectacle of colour with white snow on the peaks, brilliant autumn colours on the mountainside, and still green leaves by the river.

Soak in the atmosphere as you stroll across the suspension bridge with the crystal-clear Himekawa River flowing below and the grandeur of the Alps always watching over the scene. A place where you can get a feel of rural Japan, calm and unhurried, with a quiet beauty which will stay long in your memory.

Come with us for more peaceful moments of beauty and wonderful autumn sights on a drive tour this November.

There are festivals in Japan that draw the crowds, and then there are traditions so deeply rooted, so quietly extraordinary, that they feel like a privilege just to witness. The Owara Kaze no Bon is one of Japan's most celebrated folk traditions, held in Yatsuo, a beautifully preserved historic district in southern Toyama City, and renowned for its hauntingly elegant traditional dances.

With a history stretching back over 300 years, it originated as a prayer to appease the wind gods and protect the harvest from typhoons and storms. Today, it remains one of the most soul-stirring cultural experiences in all of Japan.

Dancers move in flowing yukata and low-brimmed straw hats that gently obscure their faces, performing to the melancholic sounds of the shamisen, the kokyu, Japan's only bowed string instrument, taiko drums and flute. Male dancers perform with powerful, grounded movements, while female dancers move with a grace and delicacy that is almost impossible to put into words. The overall effect is mesmerising – slow, poetic, and deeply moving in a way that is uniquely Japanese.

Follow us to the charming town of Yatsuo this September for a truly special experience. Though our visit falls outside of festival season, you will get to enjoy a private performance by local dancers and live musicians, just for our group. No crowds, no distractions. Just you, the music, and one of Japan's most beautiful living traditions unfolding right before you in an intimate setting.

Join us for this rare experience and other memorable moments on an journey through Japan like you’ve never had before on a special tour this September.

Some landscapes are so beautiful they inspire legends. Miho no Matsubara, a sweeping pine-lined coastline on in Shizuoka prefecture, is one of them, and one look tells you exactly why it has captured the hearts of Japanese artists, poets and travellers for centuries.

Over 30,000 black pine trees, some more than 200 years old, line nearly 7km of coastline along Suruga Bay. Beyond them, on a clear day, the unmistakable silhouette of Mt. Fuji rises majestically across the water.

It is one of the most iconic views in all of Japan, named one of Japan’s New Three Scenic Views, and part of Mt Fuji’s UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, recognised as a sacred place and source of artistic inspiration.

At the heart of the grove stands the Hagoromo no Matsu, an old pine tree at the centre of one of Japan's most beloved legends. The story goes that a celestial maiden who descended from the heavens hung her feathered robe on its branches. The robe was taken by a passing fisherman who only returned it after she danced for him. The legend lives on today, immortalised in the classical Noh drama “Hagoromo” which is performed near the site every year.

Walking the pine-shaded Kami no Michi, the "Path of the Gods", with ancient trees on either side and the sound of waves ahead, breathing in the sea air, and taking in a view so perfectly composed that it has been painted and re-painted for generations, Miho no Matsubara is a place that rewards simply being there.

Witness this iconic view and more wonderful sights of Japan’s top mountain for yourself when you follow us on a drive tour around Mt Fuji this December!
