“To tell a woman everything she cannot do is to tell her what she can” - Spanish Proverb

Happy International Women’s Day (we know we’re a little late🎂!) This year’s campaign calls us to “ Choose To Challenge”

We choose to challenge social stigma and discrimination associated with mental health.

From challenge comes change and we want to see equality between physical and mental illness.

Everyone has a role to play in creating a mentally healthy community - one that is inclusive, rejects discrimination and supports recovery.

We’ve come a long way as a community but there is still so much more work to do. We are grateful for the women before us who have sacrificed, paved ways and created opportunities for women today.

This proves one thing without a doubt:
Women are already strong.

So we’re not here to prove or to ‘be strong’. We’re here to change the way the world perceives that strength.

PS: Throwback to our in 2019 where we roughed it all up and trekked for hours through the forest!

*FEBRUARY’S COMMUNAL COOKING SESSION* (Update: Only 2 spots left!)

After almost a year of non physical sessions, we’re back with one of our ladies favourite sessions - Communal Cooking!

In this session, we will be gathering and spending the morning making food with Ubi (sweet potato/tapioca)! You will learn the basics of picking the right ubi for making kuihs, baking and for savoury dishes. You will also learn 3 well loved traditional recipes using ubi.

We will be making: Kuih Keria, Kuih Bingka Ubi and Lauk Pucuk Ubi 🍠

This session is for you who loves creating food with your hands and for you who have always wanted to try creating something in the kitchen but you’re not quite sure of where to start. Choose to relax and enjoy your own quiet company or have meaningful conversations with other participants as we make food with our hands + hearts. Hot tea will be served for you to enjoy your kuih, sambal belacan + hot piping rice on the house too so you can enjoy the lauk pucuk ubi!

** JANUARY’S COMMUNITY BRUNCH TALK** (3 SPOTS LEFT) Sign up link in our bio!

2020 has been a difficult year for many of us. While our experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic may be different from each other, we know that aspects of a pandemic can contribute to both individual and collective trauma.

Disruptions in daily life, feelings of being stuck, lonely, disconnected, increased feelings of vulnerability are some of the effects that we may or are still experiencing. For some people, a traumatic event like this can trigger past traumas. On the other hand, some may struggle in accepting and understanding new feelings and reactions that they’ve not experienced before previously.

With a future that seems uncertain, how can we learn to embrace and thrive in uncertainty?

What is uncertainty?

Is it an attempt to escape commitment or does it come from a place of deep commitment?

Is it being about a liberation from pain and difficulty or does embracing uncertainty requires us to face things in a way that is both hard and courageous?

How do we begin to heal?

In this session, we will explore these themes and share our experiences in a safe non judgemental space both individually and as a group. And as per our tradition, warm food and drinks will be served for our intimate circle gathering.

The word “mother” carries a meaning which is unique to each person and their own personal experiences. For some, today is a day of rightful celebration and victory. For some, today is a day of grief, loss, longing. Whatever you feel today, you are allowed to feel the way you feel. 💚

Here’s to the woman that gets up everyday and tries again and gives her all, serving a purpose bigger than herself.
To the one who is always hopeful, loving, forgiving, patient, nurturing to others; may you never forget that YOU are deserving of that love, forgiveness, patience and nurture too.

Happy Mother’s Day 💚

Hey growth warrior,

Here’s letting you know that we’re still here and will continue to be 💚

We know that while some are grateful for the extension of the Circuit Breaker in Singapore, there are many others who are struggling in unsafe homes, in stressful roles and responsibilities and many more. We hear you, we see you and we want to carry those struggles that you’ve been shouldering all by yourself all this while. Please know that you are not alone in this.

We will be hosting a free virtual and private Communal Creative session this weekend and if you love drawing/doodling, we hope you’ll join us in gathering like how we always do, create together and celebrate our little wins. We’ll be sharing the details in our next post!

Truly, in community do we find healing 💚

*SUPPORT AND RESOURCES FOR VIOLENCE AND ABUSE VICTIMS (SINGAPORE)*

AMENDMENT: We’ve been informed of some updates with regards to our resource here. Kindly note that AWWA and Lakeside Family services are not specialised in family violence work and would not be able to provide appropriate resources if people call in for help. The three family violence specialist centres in SG are : PAVE, TRANSSAFE and Care Corner Project Start. PAVE has recently integrated its family violence and child abuse centers and expanded to work to extra-familial violence like dating violence. Safe Space doesn’t exist anymore because PAVE has integrated both centres.

As Singapore implements circuit breaker measures from 7 April onwards, there will be an increase in social isolation. This means that victims of family violence are now trapped at home with their abusers to an unprecedented degree, thus making it more difficult for victims to reach out for help.

There are many evidences in the past that show family violence rates rise in the wake of emergencies such as natural disasters and disease outbreaks.

This resource is made for everyone because abuse does not discriminate. Always look out for one another, check in on your friend/family who may have gone quiet during this period to see if they are okay and if there’s any way you can support them.

If you are someone who is experiencing violence, please know that you CAN reach out for help and you are deserving to feel safe and secured. Your safety and your life matters.

Here’s a list that we’ve gathered and though it may not be exhaustive, we hope that it helps. Please include in the comments if you know of any resources that are not included here and would be beneficial 💚

*MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES AND SUPPORT FOR COVID-19 IN SINGAPORE*

If you or a loved one is currently struggling with the current situation, please do know that you don’t need to go through it all by yourself.

Here’s a list that we’ve gathered (clinics, websites and apps) and though it may not be exhaustive, we hope that it helps. Please include in the comments if you know of any places/websites/apps that are not included here and are helpful in this period 💚

Thank you to our medical professionals, counsellors who have offered free, reduced rates and pay as you can services in this time of crisis.

In challenging and uncertain times, may we never give up looking for the helpers. We will always find people who are helping and not forgetting that we too can be that source of light and comfort to others.

Throwback to our last Growth Table Project with as she shared her journey being an illustrator, her struggles, her wins and what she’s learnt about herself and her craft.

We’re going to be missing the group photo huddle for awhile but we’re creating the opportunity to remain connected with each one of you through other platforms. In case you missed it, we rolled out two virtual community brunch talk sessions to our subscribers last night. Do check it out if you haven’t, growth warrior!

Sneaks of March’s Exploration with Clay and sharing the process and creations of our participants. We shared about our experiences with triggers and how it made us felt. We also discussed the concept of boundaries and identifying what keeps us safe. Both sides of emotions were represented and expressed through the creation of clay in literal or abstract forms.

Here are the works that are posted with permission. Swipe to see bits of the process!

We’re hosting a small (only 5 participants) Communal Creative programme using embroidery as a form of healing in April. This session is especially for ladies who have no safe space in their physical environment to practice mental wellness during this challenging time. Our objectives for these sessions is to encourage art as a medium of expression, healing and recovery. There’s no right or wrong in art, but rather a means of reaffirming who you are/was/could be and what matters to you most.

More details can be found by clicking the Communal Creative link in our profile 💚
