ARTS FISSION A contemporary dance company since 1994 known for its diverse and groundbreaking works. The company has presented dance works regionally and internationally.

Led by Cultural Medallion recipient Angela Liong, the company creates dynamic, hybrid dance pieces that connect with everyday life and people. Composer Jon Lin Chua shares her experimental method of integrating sound with movement that blurs the distinct boundary between dancers and musicians.

The Bamboo Forest is evoked by a recorded soundscape of bamboo rustling, creaking, and wind chimes before transforming into the elements of mist, wind, and rain through movements.

The tasks of the Herbalist are solely generated from live acoustic material to create an intimate and meditative sonic space for her solo dance.

The finale of the communal drinking dance inspired by the Vietnamese toast is a spontaneous, single rhythmic field with live clapping, stamping, vocalisation, and clacking from bamboo bracelet slats worn by the dancers.

The Herbalist — High Priestess of the village

Using dried leaves in a large metal basin, Aisha applies the actions of “stirring and lifting” to create the ritualistic cleansing of a herbal bath. With the help of composer Jon Lin Chua, she simulates sound texture of the dried leaves symbolic of words in a private prayer.

How a rustic partake of food and drink led to a creative expression.

Working with composer Jon Lin Chua, a hand-tapping rhythmic phrase inspired by the villagers’ calls to toast is developed. Marveen uses the tapping rhythm to frame a rustic performance that expresses camaraderie with unison moves. Eventually everyone in the drinking party take to their feet and stomp out a boisterous communal dance.
