Bounded by Hsinchu County on the north, Taichung on the south, the Taiwan Strait to the west, and the towering central mountains on the east, Miaoli is a quiet, primarily rural county. Striding through the modern streets of Taiwan’s big cities, it seems hard to believe that within living memory the island was primarily an agrarian society.
