Have you heard? We removed Tanzania’s most popular cultural experience from our programme?
Honestly, it’s a really difficult decision to remove experiences people already expect to see. We’ve always believed travel should support local communities and we recognise the privilege that comes with being able to visit places like these. But over time, we kept hearing the same feedback after visits to the Maasai village.
People often left feeling pressured to donate more, to buy more, or to contribute beyond what they were comfortable with. And that’s where we drew the line.
Most of us want to support local communities. But not by feeling cornered to doing so. We knew the best cultural experiences aren’t the ones where you’re constantly being asked for something.
They’re the ones where you’re invited into someone’s way of life. And that’s one of the reasons we love visiting the Hadzabe tribe. After meeting the village chief, you’ll join the men on their morning breakfast hunt. Not a demonstration. Not a performance. You’ll get the chance to watch them track prey with their dogs, work together as a team, and start a fire in under a minute to cook what they just hunted. It really felt with you stepped into a National Geographic documentary. And when you leave, the feeling isn’t discomfort. It’s respect and appreciation.
