Delhi Food Special Three: Lunch at Andhra Bhawan Canteen

Lunch at Andhra Bhawan is like a trip to the circus. You pay at the cash counter and wait for your turn to sit, while a south Indian Danny DeVito-esque man plays ringmaster and yells at crew that juggles food between the tables.

The meal plays delightful tricks with your tongue and your eyes look around in disbelief at the functioning anarchy that surrounds you. The vegetarian thali (plate with assorted vegetable curries, yellow lentil curry, rice, fried puffed bread, plain yogurt and sweet semolina) and the mutton fry are the star attractions. Extra servings are free. The noon show ends at three.

Where: Andhra Pradesh Bhawan, Jaswant Singh Road, New Delhi.

Delhi Food Special Two: Breakfast at Lotan Chholewala.

Lotan Chholewala’s magic chhole-kulche (chickpeas in thick gravy with Indian pita bread) can do what even shamans can’t. It can transform any day of the week into a Sunday. Every plate is a well-disguised sleeping pill that comes in two variants – spicy and non-spicy. Go for the non-spicy one if you’re not confident of handling the masala. Either ways, a bottle of water, juice or cola is essential to wash down the meal. Mr Lotan sells from a cart seven to nine every morning but he runs out well ahead of time. Get there early and look for the queue.

Where: Near Hauz Qazi Chowk, Chawri Bazaar, Old Delhi.

Delhi Food Special One: Dinner at Nizamuddin.

Shahi Muradabadi Biryaniwala is no saint or poet. But his food can set your soul free. His fragrant chicken and beef biryanis (rich, flavoured rice cooked overnight with steamed meat and light spices) sit in a closed, mystic vessel. Once on your plate, the meat is soft, the rice moist and the entire concoction sublime. Smell the salvation before you eat it.

The beef tikkas (grilled chunks of spicy minced meat) and beef seekh (grilled minced meat skewers) from the first eatery on your right as you enter the lane are experiments with wisdom. And your face will radiate the illumination within after the firni (sweet milk and rice pudding) from Aap Ki Khatir.

Where:
Shahi Muradabadi Biryaniwala, A-58, Bawli Gate, Nizamuddin, New Delhi.
Aap Ki Khatir Restaurant, Bawli Gate, Nizamuddin, New Delhi.

Info on climbing Gunung Gede chapter 2-

Tableland and beyond- the Gede tableland is your camping site. Day temperatures hover around 15-20 degrees celsius. At night, if it drizzles or rains, they will drop to 5. If not, definitely to 10 degrees. So, light woollens, sleeping bags, camping equipment such as a small stove, disposable cutlery and a tent are a must. If you're sensitive to weather, carry more warm clothes.

You will reach the tableland in 2-3hrs depending on your hiking speed. Enjoy the lush rainforest around you as you climb.

Info on climbing Gunung Gede-

Best time- any day of the week from Apr-Sept. The peak is often closed from Oct-Mar due to possible landslides caused by rain.

The climb, night camp and descent take an entire weekend. Start from Jakarta by car or bus no later than 8am on day 1. Due to heavy traffic, the ride may take 2.5hrs. Once you reach the main gate of the national park, you can begin climbing to the stunning, mist-blanketed, alpine-vegetated (yes, so close to the equator) tableland right in the middle of the mountain.

How to get to Belitong?

An hour-long flight from Jakarta.

Watchouts- monkeys on the way from the airport to the city, especially if you're on a bike.

Bigger watchout- the desire not to come back to your everyday life once you see the beaches.

Also ask locals for the beach where the famous film Laskar Pelangi was shot. There are coves here that make the setting even more spectacular at sunset.

Must visit the part of the island from where one can see the bird-shaped island called Pulau Burung. You can even walk to it during low tide. There's a few more islands like this littered on the north-western Coast.

Also, make sure you rent a boat to go to the island called Pulau lengkuas. It has a 100-yr old lighthouse from the top of which the views are too stunning to describe. And this island will make you stare lazily for hours at the coconut palms and hammocks on its fringes.

What to do there- simply relax. The white, powdery sand beaches of Tanjung Tinggi and Tanjung Kelayang with their surreal and awe-inspiring granite boulders jutting out of the shallow, turquoise-green-blue waters are the perfect setting for walks, sunbathing, book reading. The surrounding town and villages are sleepy, rustic and the few hotels on the beaches are pleasant and just about good enough. This is not your classical luxury holiday. The seafood is cheap and great.
