Road Unraveled

Road Unraveled Part-time travelers Stephanie and Adam trying to see as much of the world as our vacation time allows. Travel tips, news and stories. Thanks for joining us!

We are Stephanie and Adam, and we’re on a quest to maximize our vacation time and see as much of this amazing planet as possible. Originally from Portland, Oregon (Adam) and Boston, Massachusetts (Stephanie), we currently live and work in the Washington, DC area- and we have no plans to quit our day jobs. Like many professionals, our wanderlust tendencies used to be confined to web searches and Pi

nterest. In 2009, we decided to change that by creating a list of places we wanted to see around the world and prioritize travel just like we prioritize our jobs, friends, and family. Fortunately, vacation time is something we both have, so now if we’re not on the road we’re probably researching or packing for the next trip! We’ve had some amazing adventures and we’ve learned a lot along the way. We hope to use this blog to share those stories and hopefully inspire others to use every day of their vacation time to go explore the world. Road Unraveled is dedicated to untangling some of the challenges that come with planning trips and taking them. It’s a combination of stories from the road, stories about the road, and tips for navigating whichever road you’re on. It’s proof that you can balance your career and home life with journeys that weave through foreign cities and nearby towns. Most of all, it’s our tribute to the incredible experiences and people we meet along the way.

A brief journey in three parts. You never know what you’ll find around the Amazon’s many twists and turns, especially during the high water season! Let us know if you’re familiar with the special guest we met at the end!

We had an incredible introduction to the Amazon today as we explored from the river, which gave us an amazing perspective of what is happening from below the water’s surface to high in the skies above. Here’s a quick moment of zen. 🥰

NEW POST! Instead of a more classic beach trip, our big summer vacation this year took us to one of the most remote parts of the planet for a full week of fun on land and on the water. Our latest post shares the story of our trip to the Arctic north with Lindblad Expeditions. Check it out!

So great to be back in Slovenia after 9 years! 🇸🇮 We were up before dawn to watch the sunrise over Lake Bled. Walked around the lake, hiked up to a couple view points, took a boat out to the island to see the historic church (est. 1142), and enjoyed their signature Bled Cream Cake with Slovenian wine. Today was a good day!

NEW POST: Most people spend months planning for a New Year’s Eve trip to London. We had mere hours to prepare: in fact, when our trip to Edinburgh's Hogmanay crumbled just a day before New Year's Eve, our pivot to London's fireworks display came together in just 30 minutes. Check out our latest post and discover what we learned from planning our London New Year’s Eve experience in record time!

Hard to believe today is our last day in Edinburgh, but when Edinburgh canceled all Hogmanay events due to weather (which has been brutal!), we made a last minute pivot and decided to leave tomorrow morning.

We had a wonderful couple of days exploring the city and a few spots outside of it, including an afternoon at Rosslyn Chapel (made famous by The Da Vinci Code book/movie) and a day trip to the Scottish Highlands, Caledonian Canal, and Loch Ness to say hello to Nessie. Edinburgh is fantastic, and we can’t wait to return for a Hogmanay do over someday.

So now we’re off to London tomorrow morning, and we will greet 2025 from the Victoria Embankment as we watch the fireworks in a different, but equally iconic, NYE spot.

Travel is wild and unpredictable sometimes, and we’re so grateful to turn lemons into lemonade on this New Year’s Eve journey!

NEW POST: Happy Holidays! One of our favorite annual traditions is hitting the pause button to look back on our year on travel. This is our opportunity to reflect on what went well, what could have gone better, and just how much we have to be grateful for as one year ends and another begins. Check out our Travel Year in Review!
