And here is another legend about Babji zob mountain ⛰
It involves a witch and a curse!
As old people say, an old woman lived on plato Jelovica a long time ago. She was as old as 150 years, and she was a witch which was hiding there from the local people who wanted to see her burnt on a huge fire.
The witch was a powerful magician – she was collecting herbs to make potions and put bad spells all over the valley. Women were afraid of her curse, and farmers couldn’t hope to harvest from their grounds if they were under the witch’s spell. This is why people wanted the witch dead.
But when the witch got older and started losing her power, she almost quit collecting herbs and felt that her end was close. Nobody could say for sure how old she was at that moment, but definitely older that 100. One day, when the witch was not able to collect enough herbs to make a potion, she got so angry that she started throwing them over the edge of the mountain plateau and cursing, but suddenly slipped. She was shaking with anger and pain, and the mountain echo was repeating her curses and spreading horrible screams all over the valley:
- Oh Jelovica, human beings will never be able to set their feet on your ground, its gentle slopes will be turned into the steepest cliff!
And as she said, since then, at the edge of Elovice plateau, which is by Bohinjska Bela village, stands the forbidding rock of Babji Zob mountain. And that’s how the story ends!
Today at the top of Babji Zob mountain there is a nice viewpoint and a cabin which operates as a shelter where exhausted travellers can take a rest. The starting point of the hiking trail up to the mountain (1128 m) is at Kupljenik village, which is by Lake Bled.
