Every winter, the ancient town of Ptuj — Slovenia’s oldest city — transforms into a living, breathing stage for one of the country’s most cherished traditions: the Carnival, or Kurentovanje. With cobbled streets echoing the rhythm of drums and laughter, Ptuj proudly puts on its Carnival mask and steps into a world of folklore, celebration, and magic.
During this time, the city is symbolically ruled by the Carnival Prince, who presides over the festivities until Easter, keeping centuries-old customs alive in the modern age.
One of the most heartwarming sights is the passionate involvement of the younger generation. Traditions here aren’t fading relics — they’re vibrant, inherited treasures, passed from hand to hand, heart to heart.
The highlight is the grand Carnival Parade, where over 2,400 costumed figures take to the streets. Most wear traditional masks unique to the region — like the shaggy, bell-rattling Kurenti, believed to chase away winter — while others come from across Slovenia and beyond, adding international flair to this age-old celebration.
Ptuj in Carnival season is not just a destination — it’s an experience. A step back in time, a dance with tradition, and a warm welcome into the soul of Slovenia.
