Ljubljana still remembers Yugoslavia. 🎵

Most visitors discover Ljubljana through its Old Town, the castle and Plečnik. But that is only part of the story.

For decades, Ljubljana was a city in Yugoslavia, and that period left its traces not only in architecture and history, but also in everyday life, design, music and popular culture.

These are the layers of Ljubljana I enjoy showing my guests too. Because to understand a city, sometimes you have to look beyond its landmarks.

How much of Ljubljana do you miss when you only follow the main sights?

Just a few minutes from the main square, on Trubarjeva cesta, you’ll find these stones. Most people walk past without noticing them.

They’re not random.

They are a small clue to a completely different Ljubljana that once existed here.

The rest of the story? That one I save for my guests. 🗝️

España, Argentina y Chile reunidos esta mañana para descubrir Ljubljana, su historia y sus rincones.

Una de las cosas más bonitas de ser guía es precisamente esto: conocer a personas que llegan desde lugares completamente diferentes y compartir con ellas durante unas horas la ciudad en la que nací y crecí.

En 1895, un fuerte terremoto sacudió Liubliana.

Fue una tragedia, pero también un punto de inflexión. En los años siguientes, la ciudad empezó a transformarse y a adquirir una imagen mucho más moderna.

Lo fascinante es que más de 130 años después todavía podemos reconocer esa transformación mientras paseamos por sus calles.

La historia de una ciudad no está solamente en los libros. A veces está escrita en sus fachadas. 🏛️

Some people see an old magazine.

I see an invitation to another time. 📽️

I found this 1956 issue of Filmski vjesnik in an old suitcase and couldn’t stop turning the pages.

The actresses. The hairstyles. The glamour. The films people were waiting to see.

I’ve always loved history, but perhaps even more than the big events, I love these small traces of ordinary life.

Because they remind us that 1956 wasn’t always “the past.”

Once, it was today.

Before Ljubljana, there was Emona. 🏛️

Nearly 2,000 years ago, a Roman city stood here. And part of its defensive wall is still standing today, just a short walk from Ljubljana’s historic centre.

Very few stop to think about who will introduce them to the city.

After more than 20 years of guiding in Ljubljana, I’ve seen it countless times. Visitors rarely remember every historical date or architectural detail, but they always remember the stories, the conversations and the feeling a city gave them.

One of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received didn’t come at the end of a tour.

It arrived years later.

A former guest wrote to me. The message wasn’t about the Dragon Bridge, Ljubljana Castle, or the history we had explored together.

It simply said:

“Thank you for teaching us to slow down.”

After more than 20 years of guiding visitors through my hometown, I’ve realised that the most meaningful part of my job isn’t sharing facts. It’s helping people experience Ljubljana in a way they’ll remember long after they’ve gone home.

Sometimes, all it takes is a quiet evening by the Ljubljanica River.

There are two Ljubljanas. This is one of them.

Beyond the famous bridges and the postcard views lies a completely different side of the city.

Metelkova is one of Ljubljana’s most creative neighbourhoods, where street art, music and independent culture have transformed former military barracks into a unique urban space.

Whether you love it or not, it shows that Ljubljana is much more diverse than many visitors expect.
