The Fences Must Fall, by , 2021–2026
Some of you have already noticed; others will in the coming days. *The Fences Must Fall* has fallen. After five years, the mural is being painted over.
We had the honor of co-producing the work with Kino Šiška as part of the third edition of the Ljubljana Street Art Festival, at a time when the effects of COVID-19 were still deeply present, shaping our everyday life in countless tangible and intangible ways.
It was June 2021 when we welcomed Escif to Ljubljana. Together, we have cycled through the city neighborhoods, curious of their surroundings and the graffitiscape at that particular moment. The final mural emerged from the productive encounter between two "images-signs" (P.P Pasolini): a bear painted by children on the wall of a kindergarten and a piece of political graffiti criticizing the repressive measures of the right-wing government then in power.
In a world increasingly shaped by fencing, we remain sure that the mural's message will continue to resonate in the lives of those who had passed by it. Murals may be ephemeral, yet some continue to speak long after they are gone. The fences must fall! ✊🏽
In the coming days, the side wall facing Celovška cesta will give way to a new socially engaged mural. Stay tuned, stay sharp.
