Western Slovenia and its wonderful Soča/Isonzo Valley are very popular among tourists for decades. World War I thematics and emerald green waters of Soča river attract people from all around the World, including the filmmakers of a movie Narnia - The Prince of Caspian. In the past we were limited though with the number of tourist attractions which are accessible for wheelchair users. Now the famous Kobarid museum which describes events from World War I has been made more accessible for the disabled and some of the trenches from the front on Kolovrat have been made accessible for wheelchair users. Dane Kastelic, active in Slovene politics and in the Union of paraplegics of Slovenia personally inspected the improvements. Whole projects was financed by EU, Kobarid Museum and Public fund for tourism of the Soča valley.

We have been reporting about humanitarian efforts of Ignac Habjanič from north-east Slovenia for years. He is collecting bottle caps from all around the country and with income he gets he donates them to children with special needs. Although amount of caps he can acquire is now twice less as before, cause of EU's ridiculous law on bottle caps, he is still continuing with his work. This time he managed to gather 4 tons of bottle caps and the income will go to the fund for health procedures of 14 months old Mia who requires daily neuro-therapies. Since 2011 Ignac has collected more than 90 tons of plastic bottle caps. Video news is in Slovene language and more suitable for our Slovenian followers.

Situated in Slovenia’s Triglav National Park within the gobsmacklingly beautiful Julian Alps, Lake Bohinj is a large glacial lake speckled with autumn foliage during the first few weeks of October. I love Lake Bohinj because it’s quieter and less crowded than neighboring Lake Bled, though it’s possible to visit both in one day. Early fall mornings on Lake Bohinj are quite special: calm foliage reflects in bright blue water, and strips of fog adorn the mountains. Appreciate the beauty in full with a flat trail walk around the lake, either in its entirety (6.8 miles) or just a section along the south or north shores.

Families with younger children can enjoy shorter nature walks, particularly Goldhorn’s Fairyland Trail, an interactive nature path.

Getting there: Fly into Ljubljana Airport (LJU), and drive about an hour northwest to Lake Bohinj.

Planning tip: Base yourself in serene Lake Bohinj, and visit Lake Bled early in the morning to minimize the crowds. The traditional wooden pletna boats to Bled Island and the Mother of God Church start at 8:30am in October, so it’s wise to be on one of the first.

Where to try it: Take a cable car up to the Vogel viewpoint for a panoramic vista. From here, there are many activities, such as mountain biking and hiking, including the trail to Zadnji Vogel, an alpine meadow. Another fabulous lookout is Vodnikov Lookout Point, or take the stair trek to Savica, a popular and beautiful waterfall. Carve out some time to do a scenic drive along Stara Fužina to the Vogar Viewpoint (a short walk from the parking area). The switchback-riddled route offers dazzling views into the canyon and driving past waterfalls until you reach the viewpoint overlooking Lake Bohinj. Hiking enthusiasts should embark on the 7-mile Mostnica Gorge Trail, which weaves into the lush Voja Valley, rewarding trekkers with a waterfall at the end.

We have been reporting about the achievements of the para-shooter Franček Gorazd Tiršek for years on our social networks. Now we have to report that 51 years old Tiršek, also nicknamed by many as "Nani" has finished his professional career. He won five Paralympic medals, including a golden in in Paris two years ago. We wish Nani all the best in the next chapter of his life.

Since we started with our accessible tourism project almost 10 years ago we are cooperating with tourist agencies all around the World, we met with representatives of tour operators from different continents and hosted guests from more than a dozen countries in Slovenia.
A few weeks ago we reported that we were nominated for the prize Tourism of the future which if focused on accessible tourism and innovative tourism. Project is focused primarily on countries of the Commonwealth of independent states, but they also recognized our work. We have passed the first hurdle and we are now on the shortlist to get the prize for best foreign innovative accessible tourism of the future award. In a few days we will hopefully have some good news to report about :)
