How does climate change impact Europe's brown bears? 🐻 It’s not just about temperature or habitat—it’s about what’s on the menu.

A new study published in Global Change Biology, co-authored by DivjaLabs’ Marta De Barba and Tomaž Skrbinšek, reveals that trophic interactions—the complex food webs bears rely on—are critical to predicting their future distribution and survival.

🔍 The study models how changes in prey availability, driven by climate and land use, could shrink brown bear range by up to 36%.

The 𝗕𝗘 𝗔𝗥OUND ME team often collaborates with researchers and experts in the field of forest ecosystems! 🐾

Our guide Jernej Žgur joined Simon Payne and his friends on a forest trekking adventure, where they exchanged insights about our forests, coexistence with wildlife, and monitoring large carnivores.
Simon is the author of numerous articles on nature, specializing in extinction, conservation, species rewilding, and is also emeritus professor at the University of Plymouth.

During our trip, we captured a magical moment — observing a mother bear and her cub from a safe distance in the forests of Javorniki. 🌲
Moments like these remind us of the importance of respecting nature and maintaining its delicate balance. 💚

A big thank you to Simon for sharing his knowledge and for this unforgettable experience!

We had the pleasure of hosting British nature and science writer Chantal Lyons in the Javornik forests and at the Dina Pivka where she spent the day learning about our ecosystems and the challenges of coexistence with large carnivores.

Chantal is currently working on a book about megafauna, one of chapters will focus on the brown bear. As part of her research, she joined us both in the field and at the centre to explore our experiences, approaches, and good practices in human-bear coexistence in Slovenia.

We sincerely thank her for the visit, the valuable exchange of knowledge, and her dedication to nature conservation and biodiversity.
