What do you see when you step into the forest? 🌲🐾

Last week, Jernej shared this special wildlife spotting experience with Simon, Olle, Jakob, and Albin, who were visiting SGLZŠ Postojna 🇸🇮 as part of an exchange with Vreta utbildningscentrum 🇸🇪

Together, they observed, listened, and exchanged different perspectives on nature — each bringing their own story.
That’s where the real value happens.

Think they’re totally different bears? Think again. 🐻

🐻 European brown bear vs. grizzly bear – what’s the difference?
Many people think they are completely different species… but they are not.
The grizzly bear is actually a subspecies of the brown bear (Ursus arctos).
So what makes them different?
🌍 Distribution
European brown bears live across parts of Europe – from the Carpathians and Balkans to Scandinavia.
Grizzly bears are found in North America, mainly in Alaska and western Canada.
🧬 Same species, different environments
They belong to the same species, but have adapted to very different habitats, climates and food availability.
📏 Size & appearance
Grizzlies are often larger, with a distinctive shoulder hump and longer claws adapted for digging.
European brown bears are generally smaller and more variable in appearance depending on the region.
🍽️ Diet & behaviour
Both are omnivores, but diet depends on habitat.
Grizzlies often rely more on salmon and large open landscapes.
European brown bears feed more on plants, berries, insects and occasionally ungulates.
🌲 Human landscapes
European brown bears often live in more human-dominated environments and have adapted to coexistence with people.
Grizzlies tend to occupy more remote wilderness areas.
⚖️ Management matters
Both populations are managed under different systems. In Europe, conservation, coexistence and regulated hunting play a role in maintaining stable populations and reducing conflicts.
👉 Different continents, different contexts – but the same species.

🇬🇧 Earth Day in its most beautiful form – a forest awakening 🌳🌍

What you see in the air are not snowflakes, but tiny particles of beech bud scales.

At this time of year, beech trees are budding. As the buds open, the outer scales fall off the branches. The wind carries them through the air, creating a delicate and almost magical scene.

This is a natural part of tree development – young leaves unfold into their fresh, light green color, and the forest comes alive in new shades of spring 🌿

Nature sometimes puts on a show – we just have to notice it 🌿😉

🇸🇮 Svetovni dan Zemlje v najlepši obliki – prebujajoč gozd 🌳🌍

Kar vidiš v zraku niso snežinke, ampak drobni delci ovojev listnih brstov bukve.

Bukev v tem času intenzivno brsti. Ko se brsti odprejo, zaščitne luske odpadejo z vej. Veter jih nato ponese po zraku in ustvari prav poseben, skoraj čaroben prizor.

To je povsem naraven del razvoja dreves – mladi listi se razpirajo v značilno nežno zeleno barvo, gozd pa oživi v novih odtenkih pomladi 🌿

Narava včasih uprizori spektakel – le opaziti ga moramo 🌿😉

Gozd ni samoumeven. Je prostor življenja, skrivališče neštetih bitij in tih opomnik, kako dragocena je narava. 🦌🦉🐾

Vsak korak po gozdu naj bo prežet s spoštovanjem.
Vsak obisk naj bo nežen do prostora, ki ni le naš, temveč predvsem dom njegovih prebivalcev. 🌿
Spoštujmo gozd. Varujmo njegove prebivalce. Ohranimo njegovo lepoto in mir tudi za tiste, ki prihajajo za nami. 🌍💚

The Results are In: Slovenia’s 2023 Brown Bear Genetic Monitoring Report is Now Public 🐻🇸🇮

The Slovenian Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning (Ministrstvo za naravne vire in prostor) has officially released the much-anticipated results of the 2023 brown bear genetic monitoring.

At , we believe that data is the bridge between conflict and coexistence. This report provides a critical, science-driven snapshot of the current bear population, offering the evidence-based foundation needed for responsible management and conservation in the region.

What does the latest data tell us? In our latest blog post, we break down the key findings from the report, exploring:

✅ The current population estimates and trends.
✅ Why genetic monitoring is the "gold standard" for tracking large carnivores.
✅ How these insights shape the future of science-driven coexistence.

Understanding the numbers is the first step toward ensuring a sustainable future for both local communities and wildlife.

The brown bear monitoring project was coordinated by Slovenia Forest Service (Zavod za gozdove Slovenije) and commissioned by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning.

Gozd je dom številnih živali – mi smo v njem le obiskovalci. 🌲

Upoštevajmo priporočila za ravnanje ob srečanju z medvedom in z odgovornim vedenjem preprečimo neželene situacije. Znanje in spoštovanje narave sta naša najboljša varnost. 🐻

❄️ Zima je obdobje, ko so srečanja z medvedom običajno redkejša, saj se živali večinoma zadržujejo v zavetju gozdov. Kljub temu pa so srečanja še vedno mogoča – tudi v bližini naselij, na vrtovih ali dvoriščih.

🐻 Rjavi medved se praviloma človeku umakne in se mu izogne.

⚠️ V primerih, ko velika zver pomeni neposredno nevarnost za ljudi ali premoženje, je pomembno, da ravnamo mirno in preudarno.

📌 V priloženem plakatu preverite, kako pravilno ravnati ob srečanju z medvedom in kako lahko z odgovornim ravnanjem zmanjšamo možnost neželenih obiskov.
