Our backpackers in Longyearbyen is more than just a place to stay; it's our headquarters, where travellers from around the world arrive, settle in, and prepare for the journey ahead. With the airport just minutes away, it's the perfect gateway to the wonders of Svalbard.

Barentsburg is a place that rewards curiosity.

Many visitors come for just a day or two... and leave wishing they had stayed longer.

Barentsburg is like a "matryoshka" doll. At first, you see one story. Then, as you slow down, another layer appears. And another. Pomor heritage, mining history, Arctic wildlife, Soviet architecture, hidden details, local traditions, and the people who call this remarkable place home.

The longer you stay, the more Barentsburg reveals itself.

And the same is true for "Pomor Hostel".

Our little hostel has stories hidden in every corner. Look closely at the painted décor inspired by the traditional "Mezen" folk art of Northern Russia, with its distinctive horses, birds, and ancient symbols. Notice the murals of a Pomor man and woman on the exterior, honouring the Pomor hunters and seafarers who were among the earliest people to regularly visit and live from the riches of Svalbard's shores.

And if you stay in one of our rooms, you might spot a wooden "Fan Bird", sometimes called the "Holy Spirit Bird. Traditionally carved from a single piece of wood, its delicate wings are split and opened so they gently fan and move with the slightest breeze. A centuries-old symbol from Northern Russia, it represents protection, hope, and the spirit of home.

"Pomor Hostel" is more than just a place to spend the night. It's a cozy, affordable home base where every detail has a story to tell.

We are very excited to share the release of the documentary "Ice and Coal" or "Лёд и Уголь" by Director Vadim Makharov and Cinematographer Daniil Skopintsev.

The film was shot during a journey to Spitzbergen and captures life in Barentsburg and Pyramiden — the northernmost Russian settlements in the Arctic. What makes this project especially meaningful for us is that it was filmed in the places we know so well, alongside the people who make this archipelago such a unique and powerful community.

Originally planned as a film about Arctic landscapes and wildlife, "Ice and Coal" became something much deeper: a story about the people who chose to live and work in one of the most remote places on Earth. The documentary explores daily life in the Arctic, the northernmost coal mine in the world, and the cultural spirit that continues to exist in these settlements today.

We are proud that GoArctica could support this project and help share these stories with the world.
