One of the world’s most important rooms is hidden inside a mountain on Svalbard. 🌱❄️

Just outside Longyearbyen you’ll find the Svalbard Global Seed Vault – a global back-up for the world’s crop diversity. More than 1.4 million seed samples are currently stored deep inside the mountain at –18°C, safeguarding genetic material for generations to come.

You can’t normally go inside – but seeing the iconic entrance is an experience in itself. And the Seed Vault is just one of the fascinating places you can discover locally around Longyearbyen.

And soon, the darkness is coming. 💙

Right now, Svalbard is dressed in golden autumn. The tundra is glowing in shades of rust, gold and red, the mountains feel impossibly close – and the first hints of winter are already in the air.

There’s a different kind of silence on Svalbard.

Today, Norway says its final farewell to King Harald.

Here in the High Arctic, the day is marked too.

Flags fly at half-mast in Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund. Flowers surround the miner’s monument in the heart of Longyearbyen, and Svalbard Church offers a quiet place for reflection.

Svalbard may be far from Oslo, but today, the distance feels smaller.

King Harald was a king for all of Norway – from south to north, from the mainland to our communities at 78° North.

Today, we stand together with the rest of Norway in grief and gratitude.

Thank you for your service.
Thank you for your warmth.
Thank you for the years.

Rest in peace, King Harald. 🇳🇴

Sleep where Svalbard’s miners once lived. ⛏️

At the edge of Longyearbyen, where town meets Arctic wilderness, you’ll find Coal Miners’ Cabins – a place with a story built into its walls.

When Mine 2 opened in the 1940s, barracks were built in Nybyen to house the miners working in the mountains above Longyearbyen. Today, those same buildings have been transformed into a warm, relaxed and social place to stay – while still carrying a piece of Svalbard’s mining heritage.

Because there is no single way to experience Svalbard – and no single way to stay here.

For some, it’s the comfort and atmosphere of a boutique hotel. For others, it’s waking up in a former miners’ barrack, sharing stories over breakfast and having the Arctic wilderness almost right outside the door.

September evenings in Svalbard. 🌅

After a summer where the sun never sets, sunsets have finally returned to Svalbard – and right now, they look a little something like this.

Golden light across the mountains. A quiet fjord. Long evenings where the sky seems to change colour by the minute.

September is a season of transition up here at 78° North. The days are getting shorter, the nights darker, and slowly, we’re moving towards one of the most magical times of the year: the Polar Night.

But we’re in no rush.

For now, we’ll stay right here and enjoy evenings like this. 🤍

Soon, the darkness will return – and with it, a completely different kind of Arctic magic.

There is something special about leaving the lights of Longyearbyen behind and disappearing into the Polar Night. ✨

Just a short drive into Adventdalen, you’ll find Camp Barentz – surrounded by mountains, Arctic wilderness and, during the darkest months of the year, almost complete darkness.

Inside, the fire is burning.

We gather around it for a warm meal of traditional reindeer bidos, stories from Svalbard and a closer look at one of the Arctic’s most fascinating phenomena: the Northern Lights.

And outside? No city lights. No crowds. Just darkness, silence and an endless Arctic sky.

From 14 November to 29 January, Svalbard enters the true Polar Night, when the sun stays far enough below the horizon to create darkness around the clock. This means that here, at 78° North, you might even see the Northern Lights in the middle of the day. 💚

And if the sky decides to put on a show while you’re at Camp Barentz?

That’s the kind of evening you don’t forget.
