Adult female eiders use aggressive collective defense to fight off predatory glaucous gulls. When a gull attacks, the mother ducks quickly gather their "chickens" (ducklings) into a tight bundle. The adult females then form a defensive ring around the young. They lift their bodies up, flap their wings wildly, and loudly quack and snap their beaks directly at the diving gulls to force them away.Here is what this dramatic Arctic survival battle looks like in nature.

Eider ducks actively seek out dog yards to nest. The barking huskies deter primary predators like Arctic foxes, providing a natural sanctuary. Despite the snow, these hardy Arctic birds are highly adapted and will diligently incubate their eggs, using their famously warm down to protect them from the cold

Ærfugler som hekker rett ved hundegårder på Svalbard, har ofte mye høyere suksess med å få frem unger. Når eggene omsider klekker, står mødrene og de små overfor en ny utfordring. Da må de gå den farefulle veien fra hundegården og ned til sjøen, hvor polarmåsen sitter klar.

Frostpust og poterytme
Over viddas hvite laken,
under stjerners tause blikk,
våkner urkraften i hunden,
i et samstemt øyeblikk.
Linedans i måneskinn,
poter skriver spor i snø,
bak dem suser sledemeier,
foran venter fjell og sjø.
Frostpust stiger som en tåke,
ingen ord trengs i vårt kor,
bare rytmen av de sterke,
som eier vinterfjellets jord.
