“I was an ordinary book printer, but they made me a counterfeiter when I passed through the gate of the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp”. (Adolf Burger)

This amazing view is offered by the village of Veľká Lomnica, which is also where the mentioned Adolf Burger comes from.

He was a Slovak Jewish typographer, memoir writer, Holocaust survivor.

Adolf wrote a book The Devil's Workshop: A Memoir of the N**i Counterfeiting Operation.

Operation Bernhard was to destabilise the economy of the UK.

It was obviously largest counterfeiting operation in history.

The Counterfeits won 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign language film

Part of the Slovak Route 66 is the house where mathematician, professor and optical inventor Joseph Maximilian Petzval was born.

He was the man, who revolutionized early photography and can be regarded as a founder of modern optics and photography. The first photographic portrait objective lens in the history of photography was the Petzval lens.

I could not get inside as it was close, they say, it is worth visiting.

At the spring of Hron, our second longest river in Slovakia.

More important for wine lovers, Hron also belongs to Slovak new breeds. A grape variety, well-made, full bodied, deep colour wine that can age well.

It is a crossing of the Southwest France wine grapes Abouriou and Castets.
Other Slovak red varieties are named after Slovak rivers too, like Váh, Nitranka or Rimava.

Last time I was drinking a glass of Hron was at Grand Cru Wine Gallery, why not to give it a try next time being in the Old town?

On the 29th of August 1944, Slovak National Uprising officially began against the pro-N**i Slovak Government and the German military occupation. Lieutenant Colonel Golian gave the order to "start the evacuation".

After 2 months it ended in failure.

Me, standing in front of the former lime kiln in Nemecká, part of Route 66. It was turned into a place of commemoration and a memorial room.

In January 1945, up to 900 people were shot and burned in a furnace by the German soldiers. Locals called it the 47th oven in Auschwitz.

Not only partisans but also families, women and kids lost their lives here. Many without any evidence...

That's why you can find a statue of a woman in flames next to the memorial...

A short detour from our Route 66

Špania dolina, Part I

Once, it was famous throughout Europe for its deposits of copper ore and silver.

Thanks to the Fugger-Thurzo company, who built up the greatest mining centre of the time, like a monopoly over copper mining on our territory.

Jakob Fugger the Rich comes from the German family, that dominated European business during the 15th and 16th centuries.

He was true to his motto, “I want to gain while I can,” which made him one of the richest men in history.

Let’s discover the place together.

One of the places on our Route 66 is the Protestant articular church in Hervartov from 1725.

It was already registered into the UNESCO World heritage list back in 2008.

What is so special about this church and its articulars or so called laws/rules?

It could be built only from wood and the main framework of the church was without any iron nails.

There was no tower allowed and they had to finish it within one year. You can see that from the pictures but it was not allowed to have an access from the main road.

This particular one could fit up to 1100 people and the shape of the building is of a Greek cross.
