⛰️ Discover Skalka – one of Slovakia’s oldest pilgrimage sites
Just a short drive from the European Capital of Culture Trenčín lies one of Slovakia’s most fascinating and atmospheric pilgrimage sites – Skalka Monastery.
Dating back to the 10th century, Skalka is closely connected with two of the earliest saints of the Kingdom of Hungary: St. Andrew Svorad and St. Benedict, who lived here in the 11th century.
Their lives were extremely ascetic, marked by prayer, fasting and hard physical work. The story of St. Andrew Svorad is particularly fascinating.
According to legend, during the great feast before Easter, he ate just one walnut a day. 🌰
But his story had a tragic ending.
One day, while praying the rosary on a rock above the Váh River, a group of robbers saw him and mistakenly thought he was counting money. They attacked him, killed him and threw his body into the river.
But, according to the legend, his body did not sink. 🦅 An eagle began circling above the water, helping local people discover his body, which was then recovered and buried.
Today, Skalka Monastery remains a peaceful and atmospheric place, combining history, spirituality and beautiful views of the Váh River.
